There's a lot to love about Erdrich's writing. Her ability to tell interconnected stories with well rounded characters. The emotionally charged plots she unravels over the course of the book. Her supernatural elements that always have a mundane explanation, allowing you to believe either version as you see fit.

Among many things, she allowed me to enjoy a cathartic version of an extremely pandemic-era, covid 2020 reality, something I didn't think possible. I certainly don't want all books set during this time to go so hard in the paint, but I appreciate that one of the ones I've read was by an author I so trust.

So many things make this book great, so mostly I want to just say "read it." I'm not sure how to sell it, because I liked not knowing too much, but I will say that this book is packed with literary references (including some recommended reading), gets moderately spooky, has really great characters, and takes place right on top of the apocalypse we all are living through in a way that felt fresh and cathartic for me to read. Just a really good book, a book for people who love reading. One of my favorite main characters I've ever spent time with.

Audiobook. DNF. I wanted to like this book, so many great reviews. I couldn’t get into it. I liked the voice and the story started out great but I lost interest.
