The first half, directly tapping into Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, is very strong. The second half really ups the narrative complexity and frankly becomes too much Star Wars. 75% of the way in I felt like the novel really should be wrapping things up but it had too much story to tell that frankly was not that interesting. I am surprised this is considered one of the better Star Wars novels! That could be true, but it does not say much.

Not my thing, sadly.

Stover is one of the greatest authors to touch the franchise, but still... I don't have too much of an interest in Mace Windu.

I can't even act like I fully experience this, finishing it on audiobook instead of reading, I kept losing track of it. There were some good bits, I loved Nick and Mace, the odd fun scene, but I really just had to finish this for the sake of it.

I'll give it a proper read one day to make up for this.

Could be good if you're a star wars fan. I'm a huge star wars fan and just wasn't a fan of the writing style and plot.

A bold book that has moments of extreme understanding into what war takes away from people, cultures, and ultimately the good of people--specifically the Jedi in this book. The message is great and it is well-written. Although, it gets into the weeds of vehicles, weapons, and creatures to the point of unenjoyment (like a car guy going into way too much detail about his car to show you that he KNOWS cars). The characters are strong, but I don't know if he fully captures Mace Windu but who truly can?

The audiobook is a clear recommendation for the superb narration/voice acting. I found myself wonder more than once if they sneakily switched over to Samuel L. Jackson himself.
Some of the background noise is too loud and very grating/distracting.

The views on the jedi way and war made me stop and think a lot and might be reason to bump the rating up to a 4 but the recon mission bits were a bit much for my personal liking

The afterword on the jedi war is a clear 5 stars

It's a book about war, so I shouldn't be surprised that it was so complex and even, at times, painful, but really it was the last page that just destroyed me. Mace, who has
Spoilergone through this whole book fighting against the dark, fighting against his own instinct to win and the reality that what looks like a win would actually mean a loss of his identity as a Jedi, and then in the very last page he decides that the only way to truly win in this war is to win against the dark - and Anakin Skywalker is the only one who can win that battle.

"...it does not matter if every other Jedi in the galaxy dies.

As long as Anakin lives, we have hope."

The tragic irony of
this is exactly the reason why as much as I love Star Wars, sometimes it is the worst.

Masterpiece. Excellent deep dive into the character of Mace Windu and the horrors of war. Like The Heart of Darkness but in Star Wars!
