I read Black Beauty when I was a 4th grader. Back then most of the events of this book flew over my head and had little impact on me. All I remembered was pretty black horse traveling from owner to owner. Re-reading it now some time later I can fully grasp just how impacting this novel really is. Black Beauty chronicles the life of a horse. While that does not sound like much, we come to realize that the life of a horse is not so wonderful as it is thought to be. In reality, the life of a horse is cruel, for they are most likely worked and whipped to death. It was heartbreaking to read of Black Beauty's forced separation from friends, and how he was sold from owner to owner, some kind and some cruel. As I was reading, all I hoped for was that Black Beauty would somehow have a good ending. This novel has definitely become a new favorite classic that I will want to read again in the near future. 3.75 out of 5 stars

Black Beauty commence avec la naissance d’un jeune poulain et se poursuit alors qu’il est vendu à de nombreuses reprises. Le livre nous donne accès aux pensées de l’étalon puisqu’il narre son histoire. Passant de maîtres aimants à des bourreaux de travail, de milieux aisés à de moins fortunés, son histoire a quelque chose pouvant nous faire réfléchir.

Ce livre a été publié la première fois en 1877 et je crois que l’on peut le qualifier de premier roman s’attardant aux droits et besoins des animaux. Anna Sewell fait la critique des soins apportées aux bêtes dans les années 1860 à Londres, pointant du doigt les techniques barbares utilisées pour suivre la mode et les heures interminables que les bêtes doivent travailler. Black Beauty était l’un de mes films préférés lorsque j’étais jeune et j’étais heureuse de plonger dans le roman avec mes yeux adultes. C’est définitivement un roman que j’ai terminé et qui m’a fait remettre en question certaines pratiques que l’on voit dans le domaine hippique. Bref, il s’agit d’un excellent classique à lire!
