This is one of my favourite childhood books and I'm glad I've read it again. :)
I was looking for a quick break from some of my other books and I decided to read this "childhood classic" that I missed. (I was never much of a horse person.) Wow. This book is way darker than expected. Now, I had heard going into it that the book wasn't actually written as a children's book, so I knew it would be serious, but some of the scenes were still so dark. I had considered recommending my wife read it, since she loves animals, but really I don't think she would actually enjoy it. I was very interested to see what was commonplace behavior of horses, and very sad. Quite the reflection on the coarser side of human nature.

It would be impossible to count how many times I read this when I was young.

The childhood classic tale of a horse's life from the horse's point of view. A must read for all animal lovers. Set in Victorian London we watch Beauty move from owner to owner through the ups and downs of a horse's existence. Beauty's take on the human world is enlightening.
really enjoyed this book, although i did neglect the book for a little while. it wasn't because the book was not interesting, it's because i borrowed my friend's books so i had to finish them first. i feel like i understand horses better now even though i have never really had anything to do with one
I should probably explain why I gave this timeless classic two stars.
To be perfectly honest, I didn't like it.
It was plainly written, I wasn't attached to any of the characters and Black Beauty was a pretty lame narrator.
However
There were beautiful lines in it. The good people Black Beauty met in his life, while entirely one dimensional, had stunningly good commentaries on faith in relation to people.
But then Sewell just sort of came off as preachy. Very preachy. And definitely not a fan of drinking, which, fine to each their own, but good grief, Sewell, take it down a notch.
The book didn't do it for me.
