Black Beauty is the story of a young horse name Black Beauty who tells us the story of his life.
From his early days as a young, naive colt to a smart mare.
What I mostly love about this book is the message it's trying to teach us about the importance of treating animals with respect and to stop abushing them such as harashing them or hurting them as a result of either anger, fashion and more.
What took me so long to finish this short story was because of how the chapters are so darn short that it maked me stop because I was afraid of finishing the book to earlier then I plan too.
Unfortantly this is the only story Anna Sewell has ever wrote before she gone ill, that poor woman, bless her soul.

I remember staying up until 11 (that was late for me) and learning to love reading with this book. The next week, I read it again :)
What a lovely story. A simple premise and a lovely exectution.
lighthearted
slow-paced
I love horses and this book
i loved how it was told
from the humans point of view or even 3 person it would have ruined it

I first read the abridged version when I was around 8. I loved it then and I've read it several times since and it's still one of my favorite classics.
I have always loved classic children's literature and have read much of it. This particular book is one of my favorites and I think it is equally good when you it as an adult or as a child. The characters are engaging and realistic and the story draws you in.
So many of my favorite books growing up were about horses, and far and away the one I read the most was Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. I basically had that book memorized, and when I saw not one, but two, gorgeous vintage copies at a book sale recently, I bought them both! It was time to reread my favorite childhood horse story…delicately.
Black Beauty was just as I remembered–and I still have it memorized. There wasn’t one moment that I had forgotten. The only thing that has changed is that now I understand the themes a little better.
This is very much a children’s story, so it’s simple, sweet, and has a happy ending. The main character and narrator, Beauty himself, is sweet and kind and gentle–as a child’s horse should be. The themes of this book are about how to treat man and beast with respect, don’t drink to excess, and always practice what you preach. You can learn a lot from this steady black horse, and I love seeing that my beloved favorite still holds up after so many years.

I was fairly sure that I'd read this when I was much younger, but in my quest to read the BBC Big Read books, I thought I'd better be sure. Black Beauty was always overshadowed in my mind by The Black Stallion, which had desert islands and horseracing to hold up against a story about animal cruelty.
Small wonder that, as a child, I preferred the more exciting one, no matter what apocalyptic turns the Black Stallion series took in later books.
But I think I still prefer it now. Black Beauty is fine, and the message Anna Sewell wanted to send is pretty clear, but, although this might have made it difficult to sell as a children's book, it does suffer from telling rather than showing. Black Beauty himself suffers a few times, but only in isolated incidents, and generally always has kind masters. The horses who truly suffer, their stories are told to Black Beauty, at that remove.
This sense of distance may cushion the story, but it also makes it less immediate. Ginger was interesting, but I cared less if she was abused in her distant past, or eventual future, than I would have if it had happened to the character I cared about.
It's a good book, but it's not exciting. It never really caught my imagination.
