I enjoyed this book! A pretty fast read. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series. The twists and turns were somewhat predictable and I didn't vibe with Alina's general "not like other girl" vibes at the beginning like I would have at 14, but definitely a good, fun read.

I started listening to this book because it was coming out as a Netflix series this week. The world and plot are interesting, but I do find that it follows a lot of young adult tropes. The main character focuses a lot on boys and looks, which is not my cup of tea. A girl who has a special power now being fought over by two men - one who promises power, and another her childhood love... and oh yeah, the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Overall, the good writing and plot kept me engaged long enough to keep going with it, and I’ll keep with the series.

I understand that
The Darkling is evil, but unfortunately this book did manage to sell me on the idea that he is very sexy, and I kind of wish the book was about him.
Form the most part, this is a pretty strong YA read - it largely follows the conventions of that genre, but it has a lot of interesting and unique touches that definitely make it worth a read. At a few points I did feel like the plot was a little tenuous and I do wish that the explanation for
Alina suddenly reclaiming her power
was a little more developed, as is it felt a little rushed and ill-concieved. I really enjoyed reading this all the same, and if you really enjoy the whole package of young adult fiction, this fits that bill while also holding its own within the genre.
