I continue to really enjoy Tananarive Due's writing. I didn't think anything here beat out her short story collection, but I still found it entertaining, thoughtful and imaginative. Really interesting mythology - I thought the interplay with certain Christian ideas was very compelling and unexpected. Overall I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

Due is a good writer, in the sense that her descriptions are vivid and the worlds she creates are interesting and thoughtful. But the main character is so unpleasant and this is all going to go so badly that I just can't see my way to finishing it right now. Maybe in another mood.

The MMC was deeply unlikable. Although this feels purposeful it wasn’t fun to read about someone I was mad at the whole book. He spent his immortality being cruel and neglectful and now that he “truly loves” his family, he does it in the most selfish self serving manner. Also why are these immortals so inept at committing crimes? The MFC is more sympathetic but a bit too gullible and I have trouble not bring mad at her too.

That was the most intense and exciting horror I’ve read in a long time. This is what other “vampire” stories try to do, but fail. The idea of immortality, and what happens to the human psyche because of it. There is so much grief in here, and this book explores all the themes and avenues of death.

The characters feel so human, and they feel so real. It’s amazing how much you fall in love with them, even the villains.

Complex characters and a great portrayal of how relationships and emotions shape our perception of "reality" and how that can shift from moment to moment. One star off for a very slow start.
