Hmmmmm.
After finishing Everneath a year ago I was left with mixed feelings towards Cole. I wanted to despise him but I couldn't because I could tell that there was something up with him. Getting inside his head proved me right. I'm starting to notice a beginning of a trend in YA novels with love triangles. First of all, they aren't technically "love triangles" since it's pretty obvious who the heroine favors buuut, the "evil" guy is actually worthy of her affections. As I have seen in the Shatter Me, Covenant, and now Everneath series, the second guy (i.e Warner, Seth, and Cole) are made out to be the "bad guys" even though the reality IMO is that they aren't understood. These guys believe in a cause that nobody truly understands. They may be going about their cause in a less than admirable way, but I do find it admirable that they are fighting for what they believe in. They're not ones to give up even when the world is against them.
My favorite quote that I live by is "Stand up for what you believe in even if it means standing alone" and that is exactly what these characters are doing. That's probably the reason as to why I can't bring myself to hate them. So before judging Cole (or any other character that I am describing), you should try to put yourself in their shoes. That's exactly what Neverfall does. You get to see things from Cole's POV and you realize that he isn't truly a bad guy. He's misunderstood and reading Neverfall will help you understand his motivations.

There's never all too much to say about these in-between novellas/short stories. In "Neverfall", Cole is our narrator and we get to see him go on his own little adventure. He is desperate to find out just how Nikki was able to survive the Feed so that he can make that happen for his next Forfeit. But, things go a bit array and he finds himself in dangerous situations.
I'm not sure this story did much to change my opinion of Cole. I was pretty sure that this was who he is already. He clearly cares about Nikki and he is caught between being a good and bad guy.
I don't really know what else to say about "Neverfall". I'm not sure it's an essential read when going through this series. I don't see a problem in skipping straight to Everbound after reading Everneath. However, if you like Cole, or if you feel like you would like to know him better, then read it. It's up to you...as I said, I don't feel it's necessary to the overall story.

Awesome book. It was great to read from Cole's point of view and to know more about what kind of person he is and his feelings towards Nikki.

While I appreciate how this novella expands the reader's view of the Everneath/Everling world and expands on some concepts...
I find Cole creepy. I find obsessive, stalker-ish behavior creepy and I don't like the idea of being attracted to someone because they smell like food.
So onward to Everbound and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

It was great to read this from Cole's point of view. I admit to always liking Cole - even though I shouldn't but no matter, I enjoyed reading his perspective of how he met and ultimately took Nikki to the Everneath as well as the time post Everneath where he is attempting to find out more about her surviving the feed.
Looking forward to the next book of the series. This was a great refresher for me as it has been such a long time since I read Everneath.

A pretty decent novella written from Cole's POV. It took less than an hour to read so it's a fast little diversion. It gives a little more insight into Cole and what drives him but you could probably skip it and be fine if you didn't want to read it.

has ever made me so depressed.
I'm fascinated with the insight of Cole's past, how his name is Coleson Stockflet, and I'm... just I have no words. To give. Right now.
I love Brodi Ashton's writing so much. How she voices these characters so well, as if she's a million different people and she can write a million different stories- each perspective perfect down to every generality and outlook.
Through Cole's POV, Ashton wrote constant music similes, references to Nikki, and guitars. Everything that you think would pass through Cole's head, every thought that looks like a thought only Everneath's Cole would have- she writes and develops and creates it all perfectly.
It's obvious to see how Ashton is able to differentiate how a girl is thinking compared to how a male would think- most authors who switch POVs don't really understand this difference of mindsets, let alone not understanding the difference of mindsets as natural human beings, but this is what I love about Ashton. And this is one of the few reasons why I was able to fall in love with her and this series so quickly.
This series and Under The Never Sky are my favorite series, they're the best series I've read in a very long time, because they're raw and heart breaking, but they're so filled with hope; the anxiety of something coming and the excitement if it's to be good, and the dread if it's to be devastating, but always unknowing, because they're wholeheartedly natural; honest to a person's emotions, but never overwhelming and overbearing.

P.S- lets just take a moment to also appreciate how Ashton can create a love triangle that has the astounding ability to tear someone's heart into shreds. Because three characters are so beautifully created, that it's impossible to choose sides. After reading this. I love Cole so much. And after Everbound, I was shocked. I was angry. And I was horrified at what Cole did. But I still have so much love and so much hope for him. (Even reading this and the decisions he made, were surprising and I was grabbing at my hair asking Cole "whyyyyyyyyyy!!!???" even though I knew I was just screaming at my computer screen) And then there's Jack... You can't... No human can deny Jack. Ashton has created the epitome of a love-triangle and what a love-triangle entails. Jack and Cole do not inexplicably just love Nikki who's some dimwitted and introverted girl. These characters. They're real. And I will always and forever love them.

It had been a while since I'd read book 1 of this series. I wasn't sure how much I remembered the story. I got back into this ok. It did give us a little more insight into Cole's character ... I didn't really enjoy the read. It was just rather dark and depressing.
