The start of a new series, and I liked it. I have to say I'm not particularly interested in Shuri's feelings of irritation at being compared to her brother - I mean, it's a common enough storyline and I feel like I've read it too often, even reflective of real life as it often is. I much prefer the joy Shuri takes in science (the "little Saurons" made me laugh). The most interesting thing here, though, was the Elephant's Trunk: the deliberately diverse group of women gathered to shape policy behind the scenes. That's something I'm particularly interested in reading more about.

A fun woman-centered story about Wakanda that does a great job allowing casual comic readers entry into the storyline.

My Thoughts On: Shuri #1

1. Why would Wakanda send the king of their country out for an unprecedented space mission with experimental space technology? Even if T'Challa is the Black Panther, this is a really stupid idea. This maybe feels like something scientists or astronauts should do.

2. I vaguely remember Eden from when I was reading Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther run, but I do know one thing. I ship him with Suri. They're cute.

3. Why exactly is T'Challa going out into deep space? What secrets is he keeping? I know I have to pace myself, but also I want to know.

4. I am into Leonardo Romero's artwork. I really enjoy his style. It's fresh and vibrant, which I think is perfect for a Shuri comic.

5. I love the look of the wings Shuri made for herself. I really love Shuri's entire style, but I especially love how those wings look. Our girl can both invent and design.

6. Shuri, I know you're stressed out, but it's been two weeks since you had contact with your brother and Eden. Maybe you need to focus on that instead of making yourself admittedly awesome wings? Also, this feels like further prove of why sending your king into a wormhole is a bad idea.

7. I vaguely remember Shuri's arc from Black Panther so I know she does have the powers of her ancestors, but I didn't know she has to literally hear their voices in her head all the time. That feels like it would get annoying fast.

8. I'm calling it now. I don't trust Muti. I feel like this friendship will come back to hurt Shuri somehow.

9. I love when comic book writers get into the mythology and world of Wakanda. I love the idea of the Elephant's Trunk and that Queen Ramonda feels it necessary to bring it back now. Their selection of Wakandan women is a diverse selection of the community, and their arguments over secrecy, the monarchy, and the future of their country is fascinating.

10. For once, a great cliffhanger. It has me both curious and interested but not annoyed.

I really liked the art work. This issue was really just a starting place for Shuri's story and didn't get deep into the meat of anything. But I'm looking forward to reading Shuri as the Black Panther and seeing where this series goes.

Meh. I'm loyal to Nnedi Okorafor and I'm loyal to Wakanda so I'll stick with the series.

This probably wasn't quite a 4 star for, me but I felt it didn't merit 3 stars either. The plot was a little loose and simplistic for me, but I liked the over all direction that this is moving in. It feels like a comic aimed at younger readers, which might be why it didn't quite connect with me, but overall a good continuation of the Black Panther comics.

Shuri is such a vibrant character. I can't wait to see where this story leads!
