I have to say, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this. I feel like DC has been limping along and then they come out with this.

Lex Luthor wants to join the justice league. He saved the world and he wants to continue that. At first, I felt like this was crazy. It seemed like a really bad idea, but you know something. It's a fantastic idea and it works so well. There is a virus that is released that affects people and meta humans. We didn't see much of Flash or Aquaman, but they were here.

It's not perfect, of course, but this is one of the better issues I've read of DC lately for the big super heroes and I want to acknowledge that. It was very good. It makes me want to read the other comics of some of the members and then I remember how terrible some of them are. Superman and Wonder Woman are almost different and new characters and they are simply terrible. STill, I'm wondering what I'm missing. Who knew DC still had anything left.

Don't get me wrong. I grew up on DC and I really liked them better until they forgot who their characters really well and Marvel began telling amazing stories. Marvel earned my trust while DC kept messing up. Maybe I'll give the single character threads another chance. Who knows, I guess it comes down to time. I would love for DC to start getting things right again. I do think they have some great characters if they can only remember who they are. It's ok to not make every character dark.

I tend to like the Justice League but the focus on Luthor kind of killed this for me. And why only a short mention of Owlman and Superwoman's baby—that storyline wasn't resolved and honestly I'm wondering if they were forgotten ... Nevermind, I just spoiled myself because I don't care about them. The answer is here if anyone is curious.

This whole volume just felt like an epilogue to Forever Evil with a wacky virus thrown in. And seriously ... Amazo? And I thought Bizarro was bad ... 🙄

Then finally, surprise! My favorite superhero, Green Lantern is back! -said nobody

Synopsis: The volume begins with the entire world hailing Lex Luthor as the hero he always wanted them to see him as. Lex has disappeared and the Justice League is looking for him. Eventually, they find him on a new Watchtower that he built for the League. Lex wants the League to let him join them, but they refuse, so he leaves, telling them they know where to find him. The League is also concerned about Power Ring's ring because he let off a pulse that could lead the Anti-Monitor to their earth. We follow the ring as it has chosen a new host: Jessica Cruz, an agoraphobic shut in that hasn't left her house in years. Lex pays Bruce Wayne a visit to tell him that he knows he is Batman and even with nearly undeniable proof as Bruce attacks Lex when he threatens Alfred, Bruce still won't admit he's Batman. Meanwhile, Jessica, under the ring's control, is attacking a town, which draws the attention of the Doom Patrol.

The Doom Patrol attacks Jessica, who is pleading that it isn't her fault and she doesn't want to hurt anyone. Eventually the Justice League shows up. Cyborg intefaces with the ring and catches glimpses of what befell Earth-3 as well as Jessica's past. Lex Luthor offers Captain Cold a position at Luthorcorp as head of security, which he accepts, though later reveals to Mirror Master that he took the position to pull of their greatest heist ever. In the end, Batman is the only one that can connect to Jessica and calm her down enough that the ring cannot control her. The Trinity decide to allow Lex to join the League, but only to keep an eye on him.

The next issue more or less focuses on Lex doing Justice League missions and finding the value in helping others. The Flash coaches Jessica in how to control the ring and manage her anxiety. Batman has made a plan that will result in Lex being arrested the next day. That night it is revelaed that Lex has made a deal with Owlman and in return, Owlman wants Superwoman's child.

Lex and Bruce give speeches about the partnership of their companies the next day with the Justice League watching from the crowd and on buildings. Bruce wants to see Lex's personal lab and Lex complies, revealing that his wheelchair-bound sister Lena is in his lab. Aquaman notices someone on the roof. This person jumps off and while Superman tries to catch him, it's too late. The explosion causes the release of the Amazo virus.

In 24 hours the virus had managed to make Metropolis look like Raccoon City from the Resident Evil video games. All members of the JL are out of commission except for Lex, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. We learn that the individual that casued the explosion that released the Amazo virus is named Neutron and he was sent to assassinate Lex. Lex explains that the virus was produced as a way to surrpress the powers of dangerous metahumans. However, the research on the virus was shutdown and therefore, untested. The virus results in the infected gaining metahuman powers before dying. Lex says that he needs Patient Zero in order to make a cure.

Superman and Batman do find Patient Zero, who has become a living incubator for the virus and thus, is constantly gaining new superpowers. Lex is attacked by yet another assassin named Bullet, while Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman fight Patient Zero. Batman is able to get a blood sample from Patient Zero but his mask that has protected him from becoming infected has been shattered. Batman gains bat-like powers and using a sonic scream to incapacitate Patient Zero.

Superman and Wonder Woman bring Patient Zero back to Lex, who was saved from Bullet by Captain Cold. Lex says that the blood is useless, but Superman's blood is actually the key since he exposed Superman to the virus four years prior. The rest of the infected attacked Lex, Superman and Wonder Woman, but they discover that they can freeze them in order to buy time for Lex to make the anti-virus. After everyone is cured, Patient Zero's real name is revealed to be Dr. Armen Ikarus. Ikarus, again mutates into a more normal looking person, saying he is Amazo. Neutron is shown to have developed cancer while he was sick and beyond saving. He tells Steve Trevor he wants to make a deal with Luthor and then he will tell Lex who hired Neutron to kill him. The end is the return of Hal Jordan, who Barry called in hopes he would be able to train Jessica.

Review: Whew, that was a long one. I did really enjoy this book as a whole though. After the big world stuff with the Crime Syndicate, it was nice to see that Johns took the time to go through the aftermath and also give us a fun JL story as well before Darkseid War. Again, though, Johns is setting the stage for the next big event while still being able to carry on a story that isn't entirely build-up.

It was realistic that the world would have lost their faith in the Justice League because the JL did indeed fail to stop the Crime Syndicate. And as a result, Lex Luthor is painted as being the man that saved the world and to him, this proves that a man with no superpowers can make a change, which, ya know, isn't a bad message. I thought it was kinda funny that Lex went and built a new Watchtower for the JL for the whole purpose of asking them to let him be apart of the League. I did like that they did eventually let him join because you do get to see some heartfelt moments from Lex that you don't often see. He's a very smart and manipulation person, but seeing him be touched by something as simple as a child giving him a flower was wonderful. I'm not saying I won't ever hate on Lex Luthor again, but I like him in this book.

However, I thought it was pretty shitty of Lex to threaten Alfred, even though I doubt he really intended to kill him, just to get Bruce to reveal he's Batman. I thought it was hilarious that even though Lex basically proved to himself that Bruce is Batman, Bruce absolutely refuses to admit it. It's just so fucking Batman of him.

I feel like I have to talk about Jessica Cruz because having read a lot of DC Rebirth, I love Jessica. She's part of the reason why I decided to go back and reread Johns' Justice League run. It's her origin and it is a good one. On the surface, she does appear to be the perfect host for the Volthoom ring, but she proves time and time again in this book that she has the will to fight against it that the Hal Jordan of Earth-3 did not. I liked that she was a character that was thrust into this world of superheroes against her will and she takes it like a champ even though she is literally attacked the minute the ring takes over. I felt there was a callback to the Justice League Unlimited series where Batman sits with a young girl as she dies when he is the only one that can comfort Jessica and be there for her in a way none of the other heroes could. It was such a sweet moment and I love when they let Batman have those moments.

I liked the Amazo virus outbreak arc as well. I haven't read DCeased yet, but so far, this is the closest I've read to a zombie DC book and I thought it was super entertaining. It reminded me so much of the Resident Evil games and movies with the city just looking completely deserted and newspapers flying around everywhere. Normally, I would have been annoyed with Lex here, but at the same time, Neutron did try to kill him so I wasn't that mad about Lex threatening his life. It didn't really matter in the end, I guess, because he developed an advanced form of cancer that he most definitely will not survive. Also, I just don't know who Neutron is so why would I care. I liked that Lena Luthor was brought into the comic as well. I wish the comics would use her more, given her popularity on the Supergirl tv show.

I wanted to talk about Batman's metahuman powers, too. Of course, he would get bat-like powers, but goddamn, if it isn't epic as hell. I love those brief moments in comics where they do let Batman have superpowers because it shows what a force to be reckoned with powers, but without them as well. Lastly, I am so happy that Hal Jordan came back at the end to train Jessica. I've missed him and the dynamic he's had with the League.

Loved it! It was a fun, creative story. I really liked batman's haz-bat and the fact that he got echolocation powers or something?? that was awesome.
Also I really like all the moments where you really get to see how close the justice league members are and that they do respect and care for each other. For this story you really say it with the main three but I love all those little moments.
