Beautifully crafted characters. Charming dialogue and emotional tension. External plot points were a little slow with majority of scenes occuring in a hotel room.

i was about to give this book 3* just because I finished it, but then all I could think of were problems, so I downgraded it to 2.5.
1. The lack of a cohesive POV is frustrating. It’s just not good writing. You shouldn’t need to jump back and forth between characters’ heads in the SAME paragraph to convey how they are feeling. It’s made even worse by being LAZY dual POV that does not strongly differentiate between the character voices. Oh, and a handful of times the killer’s POV is just tossed in there for no reason.
2. The idea that there could be a serial killer with no discernible pattern is not hard to believe, but HOW WOULD THEY BE KNOWN AS SERIAL?? Seriously, the first half of the novel we are told over and over again that the agents can’t kind anything to connect the murders other than completely unconnected things left at the scenes. How the hell would these seemingly random murders have been connected as serials?
3. The character personalities flipped halfway through the novel. A side character comments on it, so we know it was done purposefully, but that doesn’t mean it made sense, even with the reason stated in the book.
4. At the midway point there is atime jump that surprised me and derailed the story . It killed the plot momentum and made me think that the authors wrote themselves into a bit of a corner.
5. Speaking of plot, remember that complete lack of pattern? Well, it turns out there WAS a pattern and there is NO WAY the FBI or NYPD didn’t have anyone able to spot this pattern if they had this group of murders picked out as serials. This isn’t even the first book I’ve read with this exact serial killer pattern!
6. Lastly, the climactic moments in the novel were rushed. In fact, the pacing was poor as a whole. That lull in the middle that killed the momentum, and then an ending where no one actually has to figure anything out and confront the killer. I was shouting into the void who the killer was for at least the last few hours of the audiobook, but only becausehe was the only named character who showed up enough to make sense - motivation was never actually discussed.
Oh my god, the more I write, the more I wonder why I even finished it. It was not good writing.

Not what I was expecting. Began this book without knowing anything about it. needed more action, and not the m/m kind.
Stayed with it and it did get better. Just not really sure how I feel about it.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing was done well, I could really feel the emotions of the two characters coming through the pages. Can not wait to read the next book in the series.
