Well. This was something I read.
Honestly, it took me a while to get into this book I almost DNFed it twice. About a year or more ago when I picked this up for the first time, I barely made it past the second chapter before putting the book down. This time again I barely made it past the first five chapters. Was it worth it to persevere? Meh.
This wasn’t the worst book I’ve read, but it wasn’t exceptional. Mostly, it’s biggest flaw is the world building. For a fantasy novel that has at the heart of it tension over magic users (i.e. the kingdom the protagonist moves to hates magic users) it sure completely failed to explain why magic users were so despised and failed to explain how the magic system works at all. So. Yeah.
I have to say though that I did like the relationship between the two main characters. Mair and Dena? I listened to this as an audiobook. I have no idea how to spell their names nor do I care. The point is that they were cute. My favorite thing about their relationship was how much they valued each other’s time, company, and opinions. The two saw the best in each other, and it was really wholesome.
But yeah. That’s about all I can say about this book. It was fine. I was left kind of interested in reading the sequel, but I’m not sure it’s really worth it.
