I wish this was a full length novel instead of a short story tbh. In 30 pages I was so completely invested in the character and the events that happened, I wished there was more to it.

I really enjoyed this short story. This is the first thing I've read from Gurley, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was well written, and the story was very believable. It was a dark story, but I think that's what I liked so much about it. I'll definitely be reading more of his work, and keeping an eye out for new stuff.

Reading this, I found myself thinking of Duncan Jones' Moon, though this story is perhaps more hopeful than that film. And far more concerned with the last human's fleeting hope. And a promise that lays outside the edges of the story.

I wonder if the author left Alice's character sparse to that the reader could easily put themselves into her position without regard to specific character qualities. Unfortunately, there isn't really anything to create the empathy necessary to make this a lasting story.

I'm becoming a fan of Jason Gurley's short stories! ! Caretaker is the story of Alice, the caretaker aboard a space station when several explosions, visible even from her vantage point, occur around the world. She's lost all communications with Earth and is all alone with Eve, the voice of the space station's computer system.

Alice must make sense of her predicament and come to grips with the fact that she may well be stuck on the space station with no home to return to. Her despair, anger, and resentment are all palpable and realistically written. Haven't yet read one of Gurley's full length novels, but I will soon. He consistently delivers in the short story format!

Brief, but poignant. An excellent example of how powerful a well-written short story can be. I connected with the main character immediately, which made everything that came afterward that much more impacting. I'm definitely interested in reading more by this author.
