this was a re-read for me. i've said it before and i'll say it again: this is the best sci-fi book i've ever read.

how wells managed to put excellent world building, even better character work, humour and a bitter sweet found family arc in only around two hundred pages is incredible.

absolutely can't wait to read the rest of the series.

In recent years, I haven't been as into sci-fi as I used to be, but a friend recently read and loved this so I wanted to give it a go. And wow. What a fantastic novella. I loved Murderbot and the way it simultaneously didn't want to interact with or be perceived by humans, yet also couldn't help but save them because it was so attached to them.

The fact that Murderbot just wanted to be left alone to watch shows in peace was so funny to me and I particularly enjoyed the scenes where the crew were discussing whether they could trust it and someone claimed that it couldn't possibly be watching thousands of hours of tv, and it proved them wrong in a heartbeat. The ending was sublimely bittersweet; sad in a way that leaves a small ache in your chest, but also completely in character for Murderbot. I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes.

It's a quick fun sc-fi space adventure. I love Murderbot and because I love Murderbot I would leave it alone. Wells writes a hysterical novella that starts off the series really well. While being a fun space romp, All Systems Red still has such emotional beats-even for a robot who actively rejects its humanity. Wells explores themes of what/who is life, themes of agency, and expansive late stage capitalism without it being the main focus of the novella. I think that the ending is open-ended enough but it almost wraps up the novella too well. I really liked the characterization of Murderbot and find myself relating to the want to know one's self and to be left alone to watch TV.
