My possible adhd made it really difficult to focus while reading this. It took me a while to get through because I had to re read things over and over for them to stick. I’m pretty sure that was just a me thing and not a problem with the book.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Literally halfway into the first chapter I already loved Murderbot, and grew to love it even more as the story went on. I related to it’s social discomfort a lot lol (Lot’s of parallels to autism, I felt like). I liked the humor, I actually laughed out loud several times. I really liked the worldbuilding and the way things were subtly explained to the reader without feeling like they were being explained. I liked the human characters (especially Mensah) but I feel like the only character that was fully fleshed out was Murderbot. It is a novella so of course with that many characters not all of them are gonna get the same amount of focus but I do wish they were a little more developed. Maybe if there had been a smaller cast of characters that would’ve been better. I liked the mystery at first but was a little unsatisfied with it in the end.

I’m still going to go check out the second book from my library right away.

My feelings about the mystery reveal (major spoilers):
I didn’t love the reveal that GrayCris was just killing people because they found something that was super valuable. I kinda hoped it would’ve been something more interesting, that feels so.. boring? I also don’t know that I buy anyone going that far for money, especially because neither DeltFall nor PreservationAux knew about the remnants when they were killed/pursued, so it wasn’t like they were a current threat to GrayCris’s future fortune. I think it would’ve been cool if it took more of a horror approach and had aliens coming after them or something lol. But this isn’t marketed as horror so obviously I can’t really be mad it didn’t go that route.. and to be fair the humor would’ve felt out of place then... apparently I don’t know what I want

Murderbot is one of my new favorite characters now. I LOVED it, but felt it should have been longer. Felt character’s individual moment to shine, story moments, and build up to moments should have been more to them. Absolutely will be continuing the series.

I've read a couple other novellas this year and this is the first that I feel was not harmed by the length of the format. This story is short but it is good fun and the characters were ridiculously lovable. Murderbot is in some aspects very relatable but (thankfully) very much not in others which made them interesting and I too would do anything for Dr Mensah. I think the ending is what really won me over though as it takes the series into a more interesting direction. I will say that I am reting this five stars for a novella and that it isn't quite on the level of the full lenght novels I've rated five stars but I had a great time and look forward to continuing with the series!

Oh my gosh! I was reading an ebook that had other books included all in the same thing, so I had no idea I was at the end of the book until it ended.

That was a really tense, fun, and interesting read, and I definitely want to read the next one in the series. I'm super interested in this world, and this character.

I didn't read this for the science; I finished this in one sitting because Murderbot is dry, awkward, anxious, and someone I grew to root for. The crew is equally compelling and wow, would you believe to learn that people who actually like each other and are competent workers both as individuals and as a group make for a great read?

This review is written after a re-read.  The plan is to go through all the series as a refresher for the most recent book, Fugitive Telemetry.

I still love it.  This is definitely one of my comfort read series.  Yes, it is short and fast paced so it flies by very quickly but it is so compelling and relatable.

Originally when I read the Murderbot Diaries it was around the time I read the Imperial Radch series by Ann Leckie (both have some political intrigue plots as well if that's your jam) and this is where I think my enjoyment for overwhelmed/awkward/antisocial AI characters really bloomed.  There's also some found family vibes which I adore.
