This was a strong 3.75 for me and I would have given it a solid 4 if I didn’t listen to it on audiobook. It was still very interesting to listen to, but I just struggled with the 3rd person narration.
I did like the overall plot of the story and it wasn’t what I expected. The protagonist,Allison, was difficult to like but you can’t help but root for her and wish for her happy ending. She kept spiraling and it seemed like there was no return from the state she was in. I was waiting for the moment where she gets better, but she doesn’t. By the time it gets the ending, it was very climactic but then fell flat. It left me with so many questions and wanting to know more on what happens next. And if Allison found peace after everything she went through.

Oh my goodness, I’m so glad I saw this book in a TikTok slideshow and put it on hold at the library ASAP. I love Marcy Dermansky’s books and this was perfect after a slew of meh/3 star/DNF books. Hurricane Girl was a wild ride and did not disappoint!
Hurricane Girl is darker than her two others I’ve read, Very Nice and Bad Marie, but equally unhinged and unpredictable. I love her writing style. Recently, I read the much-hyped A Certain Hunger and hated the pretentious, overwritten style. Dermansky writes with a more minimalist approach, with punchy sentences and short chapters that propel you forward.
You’d think reading the blurb that it’s spoiling the book, but it really doesn’t. Allison’s choices are odd, her life feels surreal, and nothing she does quite makes sense. Haven’t we all been there before? I mean, maybe not losing our house in a hurricane and getting hit in the head with a vase by a violent cameraman, but you know.
The ending of this was excellent. I wanted more, but it ended in the perfect spot. Would highly recommend this novel. It’s not overdone at all—just enough to hook you and pull you along for a wild ride.
