Tommy Shakes by Rob Pierce is a crime novel describing the planning and carrying out of a rip off planned and lead by a dead beat thief and enforcer nicknamed Tommy "Shakes." Tommy is a blackout drinking boozehound and recovering heroin addict at the end of his rope, trying to pull off a last chance rip off.

Tommy's married to a lovely wife and with a teen son and is trying to make one last big score to get back onto the A-Team of criminality while his wife is fed up with his drinking and failure to appreciate his family while giving him every chance to do the right thing.

Tommy is also afflicted with a horrible, explosive personal hygiene issue that too often flares up (out) at the most inopportune times and adds quite a bit of humor to the tale.

Unfortunately, for this reader, when it comes to stories with a sad-sack-type, deadbeat protagonist, for the story to work, the character needs to be well-liked, with a willingness to see the character either succeed or carry on with the tale. While the novel is an enjoyable crime read, for lack of a better word, Tommy "Shakes" is, well, a "dick" and this reader had a difficult time caring whether or not Tommy "Shakes" was successful in his criminal endeavors.

Still, the novel is recommended to those who are looking for a time occupying, decent crime-noir thriller.
