Decent story but Flavia's voice didn't ring true.

I really love Flavia De Leuce. I absolutely laughed out loud while listening to this book. There is something endearing about such a cheeky sleuth and amateur poison expert.

I can't understand the high rating this book has. It's just so far out there to believe the narrator is eleven years old. Add on the extreme lack of any affection between the main character's family, and you just can't get attached to anyone. Forget trying to clear her dad of the crime, he should have went away, guilty or not. Not to mention all of the lingo that us Americans won't get at all. Sorry, Bradley.

Listening to on iPod. Having trouble staying engaged with this one.

Tried to listen again, not loving it.

This would have received a 4.5 star rating from me were it not for the bizarre, blatant, and completely unnecessary racism in the middle section. A major adult character - meant to be sympathetic - dresses up as a 'Chinaman' complete with yellow powder and slanted eyes via an elastic band, spouting jokes like "Honabuh ancestahs send long stamp." Later Flavia names the Mikado as one of her favorite G&S plays. Ugh. I'm amazed that few other reviewers seem to notice or mention it.

Yes, I realize that Orientalism was common in the time period spoken of (the usual defense). It's still completely unnecessary to the plot and seems thrown in for a laugh. Frankly, it was deeply offputting and makes me wonder a little about about the author's worldview.

To be fair to the rest of the book itself, it was very engaging, and Flavia is a charming heroine - charming enough that I was willing to suspend disbelief for most of the plot points that seemed just a little too unlikely.

Incredibly witty and mysterious. Flavia was entertaining and a fun narrator.

11-year-old Flavia is a delight, her wittiness and personality has me laugh and guffaw more than a few times. I read the first half in book form and last part listened on Audible, and have to say listening to The narration was better! Really brought Flavia to life! The mystery of this book takes a back seat to the entertaining characters but in a great way! I think if I continue this series I’d follow on my kindle with audible narration! 4 out of 5 stars!
