Una maravillosa fusión de realismo mágico y cachava y boina. Atrapa, y no he podido evitar acordarme de 'Cien años de soledad' o 'La casa de los espíritus' en cierta manera. Es una historia de violencia patriarcal y de clase... pero también, y sobre todo, de venganza contra esa violencia.

the book started out a bit bumpy, but from the second or third chapter onwards i quite liked it. i didn't completely warm to the writing style until the end, but i suspect that that's more down to the translation than the author's style (apart from the lack of quotation marks for direct speech and punctuation, especially commas, in general, which i personally dislike).
i appreciate the decision to tell the story from two perspectives. however, i found it disappointing how differently fleshed out and developed the two narrating characters seemed, apart from maybe the last quarter of the book. all of the grandmother's chapters were engaging and impactful, whereas most of the granddaughter's chapters felt a bit flat and dragged out and didn't quite have the same weight to them.
i really enjoyed the sharp commentary on class and gender-based violence and oppression. it was almost tough to read at times, but very necessary and i think the grit and darkness, for lack of a better word, with which it was written was perfectly appropriate.
the ending felt very abrupt, but i'm also not sure how else the story could've been wrapped up more gently. maybe this sudden ending was the only fitting one for this kind of book.

Muito muito bom. Adorei a escrita da autora, quero muito ler mais livros dela. Este livro é de uma originalidade incrível, em que o sobrenatural aparece de uma forma subtil, o que foi perfeito para mim. A forma como a autora explora os temas da pobreza, luta de classes, feminismo, é impressionante. Continua a ser uma sociedade muito desigual, e também isso dá uma importante dimensão a esta obra.
