The author's acknowledgments at the back of the book says, "I set out to write the gay forest adventure of my childhood dreams and I hope it will encourage you to stomp out into the woods to touch a tree and/or make plans to overthrow the bourgeoisie." I think that sums it up pretty well.

The first half of the book was a bit slow, both in terms of adventure and gayness; it took its time introducing the characters and the conflicts. Things definitely picked up on all fronts in the second half of the book, and overall I found it pretty enjoyable.

overall I'd say the concept of this book would be better suited to be reworked into a series of short novels. The cast of characters are all extremely intriguing and their banter with one another amusing to no end but with the tight timeline plot wise there's not enough time to be satisfied with getting to know everyone. I wanted to know more about each of the merry men and felt that in the end Mariel's character development was only just getting started. The first half of the book, while hilarious in it's jokes, was a bit meandering at times in plot and I found it difficult to be pulled into the world and story. Also as a book marketed as a romance, I found the chemistry to be lacking between our two leads, I felt a lot of moments that could've been the two of them connecting were either missed, or run over so quickly I had a hard time realizing it was supposed to be a moment building on their romance. I do look forward to reading more of this author's work and sincerely hope they can grow from the faults found in this book in future writings.
