I love a good road trip and i feel like this series really came into its own in this book. I love shepard he's my fav.

The start was slow and a bit boring, but I enjoyed getting to know more about the vampires.

An adventure is what Simon needs. It’ll cure his blues. It’ll fix him right up. To get away from this box he’s stuck in. Give him space away from it all. That’s what Penny believes and she does. Besides it’s a perfect chance to check on Agatha and see Micah.
However once the trio set foot in America for their holiday it seems everything slowly goes wrong. Oh and even across the ocean they find trouble.
To continue Simon Snow’s story is wonderful. He is attempting to figure out who he is without magic, no longer an heir, and dealing with coming out of the closet. Not to mention the wings and tail. There’s a lot Simon has to figure out. He’s in a rut. Actually it’s quite obviously he’s depressed and it is taking over many parts of his life. He’ll be easy for those to relate to who are wearing those shoes.
Then to have Baz’s input. The other side. He who is sure of himself. He knows what he wants. He was able to come into himself at Watford. He was able to decide who he wanted to be and what he wanted. Baz became while Simon was undone. Yet he still loves Snow. He expresses it he’s tried. He worries. It’s very well to have that other side of the relationship to relate to. The one who stays, who simply wants what is best for the other.
Than there is brilliant Penelope who is learning what is is to go from the star to someone quite plain. Not that she is. But she gets a lesson that things are quite different from her days at school. To see her unravel might make you sad but who doesn’t realize to that?
Also vampires. Lots and lots of vampire. Well lots of magical creatures trying to get at them. The holiday is really turning into an awful one. Probably should’ve planned more. It’s all well though. They make a friend. An unexpected friend but one who can save their butts. Oh how far they’ve all come from Watford.
There’s a lot more to be said. I’ll spoil. I know I’ll spoil it. I loved this book. I can’t wait the the next. It certainly lived up to Carry On and the magic Rowell has given us with this now series. Though I do recommend this highly for the fans and I’ll be getting my own copy soon enough I will not reread this. As much as I adore it I couldn’t bring myself to read it again. Don’t let that stop you from enjoying it. Very well could be your cup of tea.

A 3.5 really. There are things that are compelling here — I want Simon and Baz to get together FOR REAL ONCE AND FOR ALL! I want Penny to grow! Agatha in general, after her feeling so out of place and under-thought in Carry On! — and once I got into it it was a very quick read, since I wanted to keep going.
But as with Carry On, things just still feel under-developed in a bunch of places, and it was harder to ignore in this book without the trappings of Watford and a magical universe to build. I liked Rowell’s envisioning of a magical America being super disparate and scattered, and as ever I like the way magic functions through regional sayings; I also really liked the introduction of Shep.
All in all of course I’ll read the third book when it’s out, as I want to see how it all ends. But it’s still a 3.5 from me because at the end of the day I didn’t feel... particularly affected by it, if that makes sense.
