Just finished reading this after picking it up last year and putting it down after a few chapters. Which seems to be what many people did, and I believe it was because we all went into it with high expectations after SOTW. It is a bit unfair since this book is just as good, if not better in some aspects, as that one.
Its main problem was that way too much time was given to story lines and characters that were not as important to the main plot.
There is a scene towards the end of the book that takes place in the clouds over Barcelona( literally), a dream sequence under a frozen lake, and the setting for the cemetery of the forgotten books that make Zafon one of the best authors at delivering magical realism since GGM.
If you're thinking about reading this book don't think about it as a prequel to SOTW, rather as a story that takes place in the same universe and simply share a few characters (Isaac, Sempere father and son and grandson) that way you'll appreciate it more and hopefully enjoy it.

Amazing cinematic storytelling just like Shadow of the Wind. However, unlike it, the dabbling into the supernatural (while very original) did lose some of the tight plot cohesion I had come to expect after reading Shadow of the Wind. Still an amazing work and definitely worth reading!
Drama, Baby, Drama!
What a bad experience. I hold "The shadow of the wind" in very high regards and was anticipating the second part of the series for a long time.
But I was not prepared for such a convoluted thing. The characterizations are poor, the story is beyond melodrama and the ending simply makes no sense at all (the same goes for the hundred times before where you think that this is the ending).
I know that the third book hints at an explanation for this but for me this is just sloppy writing.

My rating – Three Stars.
This book was okay read but I didn't love it, and I was bit disappointed with is book also I think people who like that book your mad ancestor wrote by K.J. Bishop or the house of paper by Carlos María Domínguez may like is book. The cover of book was fine was dull. The writing was okay, and the writing was easy also the ending of book was fine.
The atmosphere was pretty good. The paced of plot was bit slow but it was still well structured and steady paced. The characters very hard to like and I did have a hard time to connect with them. The characters was fine but I would have like them flash out bit more.
