This was a quick, cute and fun read. Definitely a junior fiction novel, but if you liked Peter Pan and secretly rooted for Captain Hook then you'll enjoy this book.

This was such a fun little book! I read it in about 5 hours.
If you know me well enough, you'll know that I am in love with the story of Peter Pan and I will read/watch anything based on it. Which is how I came across Hook's Revenge.
The author has a fantastic way of telling the story. We are introduced to our narrator in the prologue, which gives the book a nice feeling. It's like being a child and listening to your grandfather telling a story (that is, if your grandfather was a pirate).
The narrator takes on an adventure along with Jocelyn Hook - a rebellious 12/13 year old girl who will not abide to society's rules. She travels to Neverland to avenge her deceased legend of a father with the help of a pirate crew, a few friends and, of course, Mr. Smee himself.
Personally I think it's a brilliant book. It's definitely not what I expected, but in a good way. The chapters are nice and short, which helps in keeping the reader focused. The witty and sarcastic comments that the narrator makes add to the atmosphere and the storytelling definitely makes the book much more enjoyable than if it was to be told from the main character's point of view.
I don't think I've ever laughed that much while reading. Especially the pirate glossary at the end. Amazing. And although it's definitely a book for the younger audience, it's nice to get a break from what you would typically read.

This book was a lot of fun; I appreciated that it used a good vocabulary and was very inclusive.

Wonderful. Hilarious. A great addition to the Never Land canon. More to come, I’m sure.

FIRST THOUGHTS:
Utterly delightful! I really enjoyed joining Jocelyn on her adventure to avenge her father. While it took a bit to get into the swing of the storytelling style, and I think it wrapped up a touch too fast, it was still such a fun read. I'd definitely recommend it!

Hook's Revenge is a darling tale, filled with lovable characters, a series of (un)fortunate events and a heartwarming lesson to be learned. It was all too easy to get swept up in this story, particularly because it revolves around one spunky gal: Jocelyn Hook, daughter of the infamous Captain James Hook. The girl's got brains, courage and a thirst for adventure, and readers will enjoy following her journey.
And what a journey! Jocelyn faces as many obstacles as you'd expect, from the gigantic crocodile that haunted and hunted her father to the ever so bothersome Peter Pan who keeps showing up at random moments. There are plenty of details to take in, and while it had the potential to be overwhelming, Schulz's excellent writing makes it all flow in a manner that is easy to read and recall.
Actually, the narration of Hook's Revenge adds extra character. Schulz writes in a way that makes it seem like we are hearing the story from the lips of an actual storyteller. I've no idea how she managed to capture the essence of oral storytelling in her novel, but it's definitely a success. Plus, the integration of random quips and pirate slang all throughout was really fun too!
Hook's Revenge, in spite of a pretty simple story arc, is colored with enough details to make things interesting. While there is a lesson for kids to learn from Jocelyn's experience, we never once lose the sense of whimsy among the events that transpire. There's clearly many more adventures ahead for brave Jocelyn and her crew, and I, for one, am looking forward to being aboard for them all!
