I couldn’t finish this one, and that’s not a reflection of the writing or the story... I just happened to get into a reading slump as I started this book

I think this book definitely had more of a focused plot than the first one. I really like how this author places an emphasis on the importance of a strong group of friends. It paints a very funny picture of the male character who's supposedly 'the chosen one', but he acknowledges that he wouldn't have been able to get very far without his insanely smart and strong group of female friends. It was nice that the female characters got the majority of the credit for the achievements of the novel, instead of them helping the main character and then the main character getting all the praise and credit, you know?

This duology is quite short but the worldbuilding is fascinating and I think it's a good story to get someone out of a reading slump!

A wonderful blend of myth, fantasy and adventure. The sequel is every bit as good as the first book. Strong characters, set in Nigeria, this is a great strong story for your fantasy loving children.

I found the audiobook in the library, so I listened to it.

I think that was my mistake because I started losing interest in the story like a third of the way in. Oops.

All I can really say is that, I think the magic system got better in the sequel and lots of things were explained like the Seven Prophet and Taj's powers. The story picked up right where it left off in the first book and it finished nicely.

In terms of ehh moments for me was that Queen Karima could've been more compelling but because she wasn't there for most of the book, physically, then I didn't feel...worried? But I understand why she was where she was for the story. There was also Arzu's family storyline which, I'm sorry, but I didn't really care too much about, especially with how much it was talked about. Then the ending, while ending nicely, was quick and too perfect?? I really thought there was going to be more talk about Karima's ending but it's more like "yeah, guess she'll live?" especially after what happened with Bo.

Personally, I think this story would be more compelling for me if it was in a visual media format like a limited tv series on Amazon or something. I think it would be visually stunning and just aahh! amazing. The book pulled me in the first half and then just...dragged me there...

But I still think this story is interesting and the magic system and world is fascinating. It's just my tastes are a bit different. This is a great starting series for those who want to get into fantasy but are not prone for it.

I still really like this story and the world Onyebuchi created, but I have the same issues with this book as I did with the first one. There are a lot of holes in the story that feel like we just missed something - like the story just skips over crucial actions or consequences. Again, I love the story, but I wish it was longer!

I wasn’t a fan of the way the characters were written in this versus in the first one. It also felt too rushed and I didn’t care as much as I should have about the characters

This series was interesting. Author gets points for bringing me a unique type of story so different than anything I've ever read. However, it didn't flow well and I often asked myself why things are happening or how much time has passed. It was a bit confusing. I suppose some of that could be due to being an audiobook rather than actually reading the book but not 100%. Overall, neat story but a bit hard to follow.

Another good, light, heartwarming read. I do wish a few elements were a little more tightened up or expanded on. Still very enjoyable to consume.
