Loving this series!
Not going to go into much details since Spoilers! Buuuuuut we see more of Selene's power and what she can do. And Selene's relationship with Damien grows in a satisfying way as well!
Let me just say....Damien is one of my favorite male characters. He has such a good heart (wanting to care for and save everyone) but he's also not perfect, he has doubts and he struggles with letting go of his grief.
I definitely had some surprises in this book and I was here for it! Can't wait to read the third book!
Christian faith rating: 2/3 (Christian allegorical elements)

This book was very slow plot-wise. Frankly there wasn’t much movement up until the last 1/8 of the book. It was focused more on the relationship between Selene & Damien, as well as Selene’s personal journey towards the Light. Note that since this is Christian fiction, there is a lot of focus on light versus dark in a very traditional or even literal sense. The author sometimes has a tendency to tell rather than show, but it’s a decent story. The idea and concepts are pretty good, just the writing isn’t very strong. I think I expect too much from anyone who writes high fantasy.
Anyway, I understand what she was trying to do here. I honestly thought the relationship development was sweet. I just wish we got more plot movement. I’m taking a break from this series for now.

I think I liked this one better than the first, but the ending is preventing me from giving it 5 stars at the moment.
The budding romance between Damien and Selene was adorable, and this is a romance book more than fantasy unlike the first one. I couldn’t put it down!

Flight of the Raven picks up right where the previous book left off without much passage of time; a few hours at most. Selene and Damien's relationship with one another plays a huge part in the arc of this book so there is obviously a larger romantic element here than in the previous book. And while this book felt much more slow-moving than Mark there were still some developments in the story that advance the plot.
In this book, Selene is really on a journey to discover just who she is. She wants to learn as much as she possibly can about the history of House Ravenwood and their gifting and use that information to inform her current situation and position in the realm. She's also digging down deep inside of herself and grappling with her feelings, emotions, and confusion about the things she's been brought up to believe. Selene is a very rich character and it was interesting to get to know her further in this book. It's a good thing that she is such a great character since the majority of the book is dealing with her and her internal struggles regarding her marriage to Damien, how she should feel about the Light (the deity of the Old Ways whom her husband and his people worship), and even the smaller issues like fitting into daily life at Northwind Castle.
Lord Damien is the perfect gentleman character. Though he does make a few blunders on occasion, for the most part, he is the quintessence of refinement and poise. You might even criticize him for being too perfect, though he felt genuine enough to me to not find him to be flawless to the point of annoyance. His earnest care and concern for his people was a great quality that he showed from the moment we're introduced to him in Book 1. He's a truly just and honest leader.
Sprinkled throughout the first three-quarters of the book are some tidbits of backstory on Damien, some history of the giftings, and other information which helps to flesh out the story world even more and make it that much richer and vivid. But the action doesn't really get going until much later. After all the character development that takes up the majority of the book, there is some action at last near the final quarter of the book.
In summation, this is a highly character-driven book with lots of time spent getting to know the major players from Book 1 on a much deeper level. And we learn more about the story world and its history and lore. This all builds up to the few bits of action we get near the end and sets up things for a much quicker-paced, action-filled adventure in the next volume. So let's hope Busse keeps the momentum going that was built up in the final chapters and carries it over to Book 3.
Content Advisory
Mentions of marital infidelity (though not graphic), multiple murders, typical war-related violence that you'd expect from a fantasy story with kingdom rivalries. There are also allusions and references to intimacy in marriage though nothing is described or explicitly stated beyond a few kisses. Would recommend for male and female readers ages 18 and up.

I was pleasantly surprised at how GOOD this book was. I always expect the worst from sequels, as my experience with sequels isn't the greatest. Many sequels feel slow, boring, and fill-ins for the rest of the series. But not this one. Flight of the Raven was full of danger, suspense, and love. It alone was such a great story.
I felt like a little girl when Selene and Damien's relationship would take a positive turn. (Let's not bring up the actual times I squealed in excitement.)
Busse once again did an awesome job developing Selene's character as well as the others. Selene, still struggling internally with whom to trust and what to believe, was realistic.
I honestly am having a difficult time explaining how much I loved this book without giving away any spoilers, so I'll end it here. I recommend this book to anyone who will love to get swept away into a suspenseful fantasy world with soft biblical undertones and looming danger. 5/5 stars.

Even in that one the foucs was about the characters more the events but tbh I loved how the emotions changed slowly, when they love each other there still doubt and fear and that's so realistic actually
the last chapters between Selene and amara were magnificent, how the jealously sister died before she could become something she desired
how our beautiful dreamwalker found her ture destiny
how North Castle became her home.
how the secrets shocked me
how everything in this book was so beautiful!

Enjoyed the second book in this saga so much! It expanded on the growing relationship between Damien and Selene as well as discussions on The Light, which was very helpful for Selene. Not sure if the third book will be the last but I do hope the Ophie says something to her family before the tale is over. She might also have a great story ahead of her if so.
❝The light will come again❞
We follow Selene as she acclimates to her betrayal of her mother, the leaving of her home and her new title as Lady Maris. Damien must deal with a new wife as well the disruption of his plans to unite the houses. Amara must now train as the new heir of House Ravenwood. The sequel was so good. I forgot how much YA focuses on romance but I didn’t mind here, Selene and Damien had me kicking me my feet. And that ending?! Can’t wait to read the last book.

“Every year we remember the Light during the darkest day. We were not left in darkness, to flounder about in this life. Instead, humankind was given hope.” He squeezed her hand.“We have hope, even with the threat of the empire.”
“Does that mean we will win?”
“No. Sometimes we lose, for reasons I don’t understand. But He does.”
3.5; Flight of the Raven is such a cozy read. There's not too much action but it's really a book you want to take your time with just to absorb everything (the descriptions of House Marise were really beautiful). There's a lot more focus on Selene's personal journey with faith in herself and also in a higher being, which got a liiiittle repetitive at times (mostly because I just wanted her to just go for it !!!) but was still enjoyable because we got to learn about the world with her. The development of Damien and Selene's relationship was really quite adorable, and plus Damien is just such a precious character.
Really looking forward to the next book because that ending set up a lot of exciting action to come!
