A perfectly constructed book that gives a fascinating insight into the danger of coercive control. The 8 step framework laid out here has and will save lives.
Loss of 0.5 due to no bibliography or referencing of research.
Such an important book, Jane Monkton-Smith brings her extensive experience as a Police Officer to understanding the pattern of Domestic violence and coercive control and how it can lead to murder. She has identified 8 stages that can be tracked and has trained Police forces to raise their awareness, which has increased prosecutions but also prevented murder in some cases. Full of case studies that are grippingly presented, this is a vital book for understanding more about this very particular devastating crime. The 8 stages are usefully explored and broken down, she also explains the variances how some people cycle through stages 1-3 and never go past that to more violence. She points out the flaw in the criminal justice system and also in the wider culture that will often chose to believe the abuser over the victim. Authoritative, important and readable, a must for anyone wishing to understand more about the dangerous patterns of coercive control and domestic violence.
A harrowing, but important and impactful, read. Had to take my time over this one, dye to the emotive nature of the content.

A very informative and clear book about Inter partner murder and domestic violence. I think this is a must read for anyone working in a mental health field or who is working where they may come across victims of domestic violence.
As the book aimed to be short and informative, I felt there were some nuances left. For example the book doesn’t explain how to distinguish control routines with ocd or autism related routines and compulsions. As a mental health practitioner I think this would have been really vital to understand better.

This examines the steps seen in coercive controlling violent relationships from beginning to the sadly so often end of murder. It is sobering how often men manage to argue murder is manslaughter

One of the best nonfiction books I've read. The author is an expert in coercive control in relationships and finds a really good balance of covering her research in an accessible way and telling the stories of victims respectfully and thoughtfully. I think the title implies a more "true crime" approach than the book actually takes and I think she's very careful and selective in the ways she uses case studies to illustrate the pattern of control and escalation that she has researched and how it plays out.
