If I were to own one series for the rest of my life, if I were to read only one series for the rest of my life, it would be this one.
If I am to forget every book I read and keep only one memorized it would be this one.
I could write a book about how much I love this series.
I know this isn’t really a review. I’ll read it a third time and review it for the first time.

After watching the first two seasons of the donghua, I was so excited to know how the story continued that I decided to start reading the books. While I liked the donghua a little bit better, I still enjoyed this book a lot. The translation seems pretty good to me - at least it doesn't feel too clunky - and the characters and plot beats are pretty much the same in both versions of the story. However, the written format allows the author to give more details about the world the story takes place in.
Because the donghua is still very present in my mind and I'd probably end up conflating both versions, I won't make a more detailed review for now. All I have to say is that, if you're interested in fantasy, Chinese culture and (slow burn) gay romance, I recommend checking out this one.

this book took me way too much time to read it. i feel like it dragged on a lot and even half of the length could have been enough to tell these two arcs. not sure if i enjoyed it less because i already watched the show twice before or what, but im so glad im finally done with this. 3 stars because i like the story, i just wish it didn’t drag on for so long
