Spoilers.

Overall, I found this book to be a slog with some incredibly dissatisfying plot holes (like if they needed a dragon scale to lure Muckmaw from the depths of the lake, why not use one of Thorn's? Why desecrate Glaedr's grave?). There were also a fair amount of unnecessary interactions, descriptions. I feel like the overall story would be enhanced by trimming some of those bits.

[Audio Review]

Absolutely no interest in reading the next one. An incredibly meandering story following the most frustrating protagonist ever. Thorne's trauma was the only thing well done imo.

Murtagh continued to make the exact same mistake over and over IMMEDIATELY after he theoretically learned from it. He also never used any of his talents in an interesting way outside of taking the air away from around people's heads (which he never used again?!?!)

The ending completely destroyed Nasuada's character for me. The entire book they hammer in the point of how she doesn't use the ancient language to bind oaths, yet as soon as Murtagh shows up she instantly makes her servants swear oaths of secrecy in the ancient language???? Also it makes no sense why she would be romantically interested in him. I understand her forgiving him, but not her giving him googly eyes.

The writing was quite frustrating, this is not an exact quote but it might as well be. "murtagh entered the room slowly. He crept around the corner and peered carefully. He looked around with great trepidation and saw the table with luscious fruits. He felt his stomach growl as he gazed over the apples and apricots. 'not right now, but later' he thought as he ever so carefully entered the room to unveil a tapestry...." And so on.

If the book is this long, at least have a lot happen (nope, 1.5 meandering side quests and then the main quest) or have good prose.

As my multiple repeat Inheritance Cycle reader husband put it "I wouldn't even recommend this book to an Eragon fan" 💀
