Honestly I read this in between the pages of other books and read about half before I went away for a week without it so kind of lost where I was with it. It ended wierdly and quite abruptly and was quite strange.

This book went literally nowhere.  Just ramblings of a money obsessed woman.

Title: The Birthday Girl
Author: Melissa de la Cruz
Format: Audiobook

:Quick Take: When all of her secrets come to light on the night of her fabulous 40th birthday party, Ellie de Florent-Stinson, a woman greatly envied by all who know her, watches as the beautiful façade of her life crumbles in one eventful night.

Thoughts: Yeah, I dnf this book. I got about 25% and lost complete interest. I just could not get into the #RichPeopleProblems riddled through this book, even if it is written by one of my favorite authors. Maybe after we have gotten through Covid and it's not all "lets eat the rich" and I will give the book another go and try to finish it.

Rating: 1 out of 5 Stars

Thank the lord this was short. This was awful. There was no hero. Everyone was awful and the twist was dumb.
ellie is really Michelle aka Mish. Surprise SA everywhere and Leo ends up killed by her abuser (mish’s father and maybe even her own father?) Mishon is actually Shona. Big story line that Ellie/mish is going to lose everything only to be saved at the last second by her investor.
the amount of times I wrote “Ellie dies right???” In this book. This book proves the point that anyone can write a book but just because they can doesn’t mean they should.

I was looking forward to reading this book. Thus when I got a copy I was very excited. Sadly, this book did not quench my thirst.

I found the characters off putting and stuck up. The one that was the most was the birthday woman herself, Ellie. She was all about showing off a wealthy image even if it meant it was all pretend. The people that Ellie was trying to impress were not her friends. It felt like a somber party. When I learned about Ellie's secret; I was like that is it. It was not a shocking one.

It was a bit of a struggle for me to get to the half way point with none of the characters intriguing me. Plus, it felt like the story moved at a slow pace for anything to really start happening. The latter half of the book did more faster but it did not change my feelings about the book overall.

Not sure what to say about this one. The cover art and blurb are misleading. It was somewhat anticlimactic. It read like a beach read at first. Well, the present day parts.
It alternated between the present and 24 years ago. Mish and Leo were best friends. Living in the same trailer park. Their friendship came to a horrible end on Leo's 16th birthday.
But, the book starts on Ellie's (formerly Mish's) lavish 40th birthday celebration. She is now rich but on the brink of losing it all. She has curated a different life from the one she started out with and wants to keep it that way.
Don't look at this book if you want some sort of thriller. That's not what this is. Plus, there is a neat and tidy ending.
All in all not a bad read. 3.5 stars.

Enjoyed the pace and characters -- very flawed and realistic without being too horribly dark.
