God was this book triggering as someone who was groomed at 15. But I’m so glad that I finished reading it.

I read this book once, years ago, and when I was about fifteen, and I didn’t really like it. It didn’t stick with me. It felt strange in a way I couldn’t really articulate.

Now, as an adult, I can honestly say I appreciate this a lot more. This book is an expertly written piece of art that will tear your heart out of you. It demonstrates the deep scars abuse can leave with you, the way it makes you think about yourself, the complicity that can be caused by manipulation, even the reluctancy to admit you’re a victim out of fear that it will become all that you are. Vanessa is messy in a way that’s understandable, she hates being pitied in the way many of us do, she seems to want to be unsympathetic because she sees herself as undeserving of sympathy.

I can’t say I love this book, but I can say I’d recommend it. I think everyone should read it. It’s a masterpiece.

A topical, difficult read that made me incredibly uncomfortable most of the time, but was so expertly written I couldn't close the book for long. I'm glad I held out hope for the ending, held out hope for her.
