“To the eldest daughters who give all that they have. Know that you are worthy of taking something for yourself too.”

  • I feel you, Hazel
  • Hehehe I love a matchmaking mama
  • Not him giving her his hat! *swoon*
  • This group of friends is too good 😂
  • He remembered her drink 😭
  • He’s gonna become so mushy for her and I am so here for it!
  • Stop they are all so freaking cute
  • Oh my gosh I’m crying 😭🫶

First of all, this story! It really just hit home for me. I was an AuPair in Italy for 3 months at the end of 2024 and the love you feel for those kids, their family. It’s unreal. And I loved that portrayal in the book.

This was one of those, of course I know where it’s heading but I can’t put it down, kind of stories. It was all just so sweet and tender, and I loved it right from the start.

Hazel is so real to me. As an oldest daughter and someone who likes to give and give, I related to her in so many ways. And I absolutely loved getting to watch her find that someone who wanted to take care of her, too.

“You deserve a guy who’s good to you. Someone to take care of you the way you do everyone else.”

And oh, Emmett. What a grump who’s actually a softie for the people he loves. He and June together were so sweet. And then him with Hazel? Off the charts.

“Each time she laughs I get the same feeling as when I throw a strike, maybe better. Pure satisfaction and accomplishment floods my veins.”

I truly just love everything Annah writes! If you haven’t read her books yet, you are missing out.

“I hope I didn’t cross a line.”
“I don’t want lines. I want us to be tangled up like the yarn you crochet with.”

Thank you to the author for the ARC of The Double Play by Annah Conwell. All opinions are my own.

While this is the fourth book in the More Than a Game series, it can be read as a standalone.

This story follows a single dad doing his best to protect and care for his daughter while he also juggles his career as a professional baseball player. When he reluctantly hires a nanny to care for his daughter, he never expects to develop feelings for her.

I absolutely loved this book! The romance was so sweet, but I also loved the parent/child relationship formed in this book. I loved how Hazel quickly bonded with June, especially because June really needed a mother figure in her life after her own mother abandoned her. After Emmett saw how good Hazel was with June, it was easy to see why he could fall for her so quickly.

I also enjoyed that the conflict seemed natural and not drawn out. While this book is mostly lighthearted, I did like how the characters experienced realistic problems that couldn’t be resolved completely.

There were some moments in the story (especially the second half) that made me a little emotional with how sweet and wholesome they were. I loved how June would say things that would make Hazel feel so loved and wanted.

Overall, I would recommend this book!

Ahh! This was so cute! I have been loving this series and I could not wait to read this one. The Double Play is the fourth book in Annah Conwell’s More Than a Game series. Emmett’s book did not disappoint.
I loved Hazel! She was so strong and had been through so much. She was trying her best to care for her sister. It was sweet to read about her interactions with Emmett and June. She truly cared for them. Emmett was trying to be the best dad that he could be. I felt for him as he tried to navigate his fears and caring for June.
I loved the emotion poured out into this book, the characters felt real and relatable. I cheered for Emmet and Hazel as they realized their feelings for each other and I empathized with them as they struggled to work through the obstacles set before them. The romance was sweet especially as Hazel and Emmett began to see each other in different lights. They were partners and friends before they became more.
The side characters were wonderful! June was the cutest and I love the way that she took to Hazel. I also loved Hazel’s sister and you really got to know Hazel better through her. The boys, Emmett’s friends, were as always perfect. They really added to the story and I am so beyond excited for the last book.
I would totally recommend The Double Play! The characters draw you in and the story was so engaging. The Double Play is a closed door romantic comedy.

AH! I love Emmett and Hazel's story!

Annah Conwell beautifully crafts a story. This book has everything I want in a good romance. The tension is perfection. I love how Emmett is different with Hazel and June. His relationship with June made my heart melt.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

Book 4 in the More Than A Game series - Annah knocked it out of the park with this book, 🤭😉 sorry I had to. Emmett is one of the grumpiest grumps I’ve read. I could not wait for his book because I love the grumps. In all his friends’ book, he was the Debby downer of love, but in this book we get to see his heart slowly warm because of Hazel’s love and kindness.

Hazel has the biggest heart and wants to take care of everyone around her. That deep need is rooted in some childhood trauma and some parental difficulties that have continued. She needs someone to take care of her too; she needs someone to scoop her up and lessen her burdens. p.s. it’s absolutely crazy how similar Hazel and I are: emotional sensitivities, hobbies, favorite video games, degree/education, lack of knowledge on sports (expect I’m a hardcore hockey girl), mannerisms, attracted to grumps, the deep need to take care of others, lifelong dreams of a whole family and safe place, and many more ways. Reading Hazel I felt like Annah may have stalked me 😂😉

Throughout the book, we get to see Emmett and Hazel trying to figure out how to articulate what they need and how the feel. 👏🏻 no 👏🏻 miscommunication 👏🏻 only 👏🏻 honest 👏🏻 conversations 👏🏻 and we love to see it. They are human so they drop the ball and have to learn what to do with conflict, but they are committed to learning and figuring it out together. It’s refreshing to read deep love and commitment despite some really hard life circumstances.

This is a light-hearted read, that covers characters living through some heavier life situations, while loving one another and bringing their little family joy.

This is a clean closed door romcom with descriptive makeouts. *author also has content warnings at beginning the book*

I received this book as an ARC and oh my goodness, I so enjoyed it. Annah Conwell has been one of my auto-read authors for a while now, probably since I first read The Golden Goal and then went back and read everything she'd published so far.

I've really loved the characters in the More than a Game series and Emmett was no different. This is very much a grumpy x sunshine story, but finding out the past behind Emmett's grumpy takes it a lot deeper than him just being a broody MMC. As Hazel brings out the hope in him, you watch him transform in front of her and his friends (which are a delightful bunch of goofs).

Hazel is the perfect characterization of the eldest daughters, the ones who always take care of others, the ones who struggle to give up control and let someone take care of them. I really adored her growth as a person throughout this story.

This book is perfect for those who love:
- No spice, but steamy romance
- Single dads
- Age gaps
- Found family
- Grumpy x sunshine
- They take care of each other
