If you want to read a book about characters with no personalities who run around doing unrealistic things with no conceivable motivation to speak of, pick this one up.
There was a real missed opportunity here to talk about how the pandemic disproportionately infected those imprisoned and how much it worsened their quality of life. (My cousin could no longer receive books because it was considered unsanitary, was kept in solitary for a ridiculous time because they didn't know what to do with him.) I was excited for this first wave of post-pandemic fiction, but it's just a few mentions of masks and off to the nonsensical plot.
I had to force myself to finish this one. The extra star is earned by some occasionally decent prose.

Sing Her Down by Ivy Pochoda was original and spell-bounding. Great prose, well-developed characters, and intricately placed plot points. I enjoyed the project of this book as well as the slow burn of this literacy work. Pochoda is a master storyteller and an amazing writer. The flow of the prose was just beautiful.

I was bored out of my mind. Every character sounds the same and the plot just meanders from scene to scene and with every new stop along the way I asked myself what the point was.
Thank you to NetGalley and Farrar Straus and Giroux for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.
