(read in the short story compilation "i have no mouth and i must scream")
insane concept and depressing as hell, yet having read stories inspired by this one kinda makes this less impactful. still really interested in playing the game, as this concept really has potential.
title line is still insane though

Abandoned after the first story.
I was kinda excited for this. Surrealism and the author being called a ‘Prose Stylist’, I thought it might end up being a favourite. But no, it really wasn’t.
It was the kind of ugly, disturbing horror that I would really rather not read. I get that the story had a message and it was portrayed strongly, but for me it just isn’t an excuse to read a story like that.
And the prose, while it was a step up from normal writing style, all it did for me was show potential. Potential that I saw being wasted anyway. It was not anything ground-breaking, and I don’t think that I’ll read any more stories by Ellison to see if he did grow. We just seem to disagree in tastes, I suppose.

Ellison’s titular story was fantastic for a second read. The majority of the stories throughout the rest of the book were very forgettable. Lonelyache and Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes were both very enjoyable and had a very erratic and engaging writing style.
I really liked the title story but life is just too short to listen to the misogynistic ramblings of an insane man for 19 hours.

Stomach churning horror.
My jaw dropped at parts of this story. Imagine being turned into something you’re not by a machine. Very apt for our times with AI, this story will probably give me nightmares. Loved it.

Yo this was absolutely fucking nuts I did not know what i was getting myself into when I stumbled across this but I listened to the audio narration on youtube by the author and I will never be the same. Dude was definitely on crack while narrating it but it made it awesome.
The narrative itself was terrifying but also lowkey sad. AM was just mad that humans didn’t let him wander, wonder, or belong.
This line was metal: “Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. Hate.”
