i expected this to be an easy 5 stars based on the context i knew about the story

i love the concept of this story, i love AM as a character, i don’t love the crazy constant misogyny in this book towards the only female character out of the group of men. it’s really distracting. i definitely like the videogame better, i think it does most stuff better, and doesn’t have the misogyny that plagues the inner monologue of the main character in this short story. other than that, i thought this was good, but i still think the game is better, and even if the short story didn’t have the sexism i’d still like the game better.

the way the mc targets the woman constantly is so weird. they’re in a frozen arctic area that AM drops them in and he’s so focused on how she’s a slut and yadadadada. i don’t care if you’re going to make unlikeable characters just make them interesting (they’re not in this case, i couldn’t tell you any of their names.)

from what i can remember, it doesn’t really go as in detail as the game. when these characters are being tortured and hurt it’s not really that impactful because there’s not a lot of info on them, although it is a short story. great concept, not great execution

i think all the written sexism is put into context when we look online and see how the author groped a woman on stage at a con. i’ve also heard about misogyny in his other works, and i’ve seen people online say how he wrote this right after his divorce/break up, so possibly that has something to do with it? harlan you weird old man.
