When I was reading In an Absent Dream, I distinctly remember having the thought that I wished there was more detail about the adventures Lundy had in between all the coming and going. When finding out this story was a thing, I was so excited! But now I’m wishing I could take it back. Lol. Don’t get me wrong! I liked the story! It was just so sad and I wish I could have known Mockery more. 🥺

I've fallen in love with this series (yes, you can ask why I didn't give it any 5 star rating yet, I'm waiting until it really makes me cry ;-)) and when I saw that this short could be either read before the fourth or after the fourth book (or as a stand alone! It will still work!) I couldn't wait any longer. I fit it into a quiet half an hour and enjoyed it immensely.

This short story is a great way to see if this series and this books might be for you. McGuire shows her storytelling qualities and style. Everything I love in the original books is in this short story too. It's a mixture of multiple points of views and moments of an extern narrator commenting with beautiful and wise sentences.

The plot of this story is heartbreaking. At least McGuire gives a warning at the beginning, but it's still quite heartbreaking. Especially because she really manages to tell this story with so much passion and emotion that even though it's short and even though we don't get to know the characters that well it still works.

McGuire also showcases in this short story how she can craft a unique and different world without info dumps and without too many details. The world comes to life because of smartly inserted words, small throw away lines and the way the kids talk to each other. Is there more to discover? Most likely. Does it still work? It certainly does.

Another short story in the worlds of wayward children. This one filling in more of the back story of Lundy and her time in the goblin market. Again this is short enough for me to not want to write anything too long but it is worth your time if you love the series and want some extra time with Lundy.

My rating system
1 - Did not enjoy
2 - Not irredeemable but has too many flaws to say I enjoyed
3 - Enjoyed it
4 - Great book but didn't love it
5 - Amazing book

Another stunning entry from Seanan, this little novella to bridge two longer novellas was perfection, and it was lovely to meet Mockery and learn about the girls' quest!

I loved this extra little story, after finishing the main book I wanted to know what happened to the 3 girls during lundys first visit and this delivered that. It was everything I hoped it would be
