3 1/2 stars. An easy read. I'd already seen the tv series which I enjoyed

I tore through this in one day. My plan was to watch each episode of the show and read the corresponding chapters but I couldn’t put it down. It’s no Downton Abbey but it’s still a good page turner.

The likeable upstairs downstairs of Downton Abbey is not in this book. There is an interesting romance, some societal intrigue, but no sense of morality in any character except the Gary Stu and Mary Sue young couple of aforementioned romance. It's not bad, but I prefer Downton Abbey.

This was a difficult book to rate.

On one hand, the author's writing style was enthralling and captivating. Even with the long chapters, I had a hard time putting this down. In addition, Charles Pope and Maria Grey were wonderful characters that I liked immensely. I saw the character development of Anne and Susan as well (Susan managed to redeem herself in the end). The historical element was very well done.

On the other hand I felt that it was a bit long winded and the giveaway of the ending in the first two chapters made for a long and sometimes tedious read. Watching the story slowly unravel was a bit frustrating.

Overall, although I was on the fence whether to buy this book or not, I'm glad I did and I may read it again at some point.
