Make a Wish

3.6 AVERAGE

Make a Wish is book 3 of the Spark House series by author Helena Hunting. It is a standalone contemporary romance, told from both POV with a HEA.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✔️ sing father
✔️ love after loss
✔️ age gap
✔️ slow burn

Harley loves kids & used to be a nanny but has been working with her sisters at Spark House for the past seven years helping organize events. The last person she expected to see at one of said events was Gavin and Peyton Rhodes, her last infant charge and her widowed father.

Now that they’re back though, Gavin doesn’t hesitate to reach out to ask for her help with Peyton and Harley is more than eager to spend time with both of them, going as far as ignoring her totally wrong for her boyfriend.

As she spends time with both Gavin and Peyton, she realizes that the connection between them. But even after breaking up with her boyfriend, navigating the delicate waters of dealing with Gavin’s grief over his wife and his overbearing in-laws proves to be more than they can handle.

Make a Wish had a lot of heart and emphasis in family and friends, particularly Harley and her sisters and it felt more like a women’s lit vs. a romance. Harley & Gavin's relationship is a slow burn and almost all of their interactions revolve around Gavin's daughter. Because of this, there wasn’t a lot of steam or romance, yet it was a very sweet story with lots of feels.

The narration by Stella Bloom and Jason Clarke was good. She does a great job with all the different voices including the male ones and I enjoyed Jason’s deep voice very much.

By the numbers review:
★ Hero:

Make a Wish is the third and final story in the Spark House series, featuring the three sisters. Harley is the youngest and she seems the most floundering in life—not sure where she belongs. She reunites with Gavin and Peyton, a widowed dad and the daughter she used to nanny for 7 years ago. I’d like to say that sparks flew when they reunited, but it felt more like she slipped right back into the nanny role.

I feel that both Gavin and Harley were well-fleshed out characters, but I didn’t understand their connection. The only thing they had in common was their love for Peyton, so the romance felt lacking. Harley seemed very meek and a bit of a doormat, while Gavin didn’t stand up for nor prioritize Harley.

And yet, Make a Wish was still a very enjoyable read. Helena Hunting’s writing keeps me interested and her character development was well done. Another good read from Helena Hunting!

Cute book!!

This book grabbed a part of my heart & took it through every level of emotion. There is a reason Helena Hunting is an automatic one-click author for me!! I love the emotional growth between the 2MCs, and I love the way the daughter was written, not too childish and not too mature, it’s a hard balance to find with authors. It isn’t a true second chance romance, but it’s not not. Absolutely a must read!!

Good, although I found the development of Gavin's feelings for Harley to be a bit abrupt. I felt like this needed to be more of a slow burn to make sense, although then there would have been less time on the back end to unpack the issues with Karen. It was weird—I felt like Marcie should have played a larger or smaller role but as it was, she was hardly mentioned until the end. Whatever. It was cute! I'm not a hater I swear.

a sweet ending for the Spark Sisters

In Make A Wish, we have Harley Sparks, the youngest of the Sparks sisters. She was a nanny for a toddler and almost kissed the widowed father. Soon after, the family moves and she is absolutely devastated. Fast forward seven years and she bumps into them at a birthday party their company throws. This story is a second chances, single parent, and trying to find love and family. Make a Wish just warmed my heart! Peyton is such a doll and too cute! I love the cameos from the Mills brothers (Shacking Up series). The story will pull at your heartstrings before stitching them back together again. I’m sad that it’s over.
