Interessante come descrizione della figura dell'istitutrice vittoriana. Attinge all'esperienza di vita dell'autrice e quindi contribuisce a completare il quadro formato dalle tre sorelle Brontë.

I finally read my first Anne Bronte! This was a quick accessible classic. It's one of the few books I've read that really shines a light on the drudgery of being a governess, especially in employ to some truly detestable people. Agnes starts out with high ideals and being naive about her role. But her charges and their parents are just the worst. Her next placement is a bit better, though the young ladies are truly insufferable.
I was quite pleasantly surprised by the happy ending though. The biggest drawback to me was how religious the book could get. It of course fit for the character, but wasn't a plus for me.
Overall though, it was an easy read that I could readily recommend.

Ainda que a vida abastada fosse sedutora... não via ameaça alguma na pobreza. Ao contrário, havia algo de revigorante em lidar com crises, em sobreviver com o que estivesse ao nosso alcance. ... E, quanto mais nós privássemos de privilégios imediatos, maiores seriam as chances de usufruirmos deles no futuro.
Acompanhamos a história de vida da jovem Agnes. Mulher, pobre e com educação. Criada em um ambiente religioso e no qual os parâmetros para casamento e modo de vida são ditados (apesar dela não se referir a isto) pelo que ela via de seus pais. O livro é embebido de reflexões motivacionais de vida tomando uma base religiosa. Talvez se eu fosse cristão apreciasse as várias passagens desse tipo que aparecem ao longo do livro.
Vamos então observando a realidade segundo o olhar da Agnes. Ela descreve o que vê e o que sente. E deixa a cargo do leitor tirar suas próprias conclusões e lições. Tal como faço certo juízo do caráter e motivação da Agnes baseado em seus pais e sua criação, o livro nos permite julgar as atitudes das crianças baseado nos modos os pais. Deste modo, essa leitura simples como vir para alguns como uma importante reflexão de que o modo de agir dos pais é de suma importância para a educação dos filhos. Como diz a própria Agnes:
Raramente as pessoas se dão conta de como prejudicam as crianças ao referenciá-las por características tão profundamente abomináveis.
E vamos acompanhando os esforços vãos da Agnes de tentar moldar o caráter de várias crianças sem dispor das ferramentas que os pais tem. Claro, podemos tomar uma interpretação distinta das passagens e imaginar que Agnes não tinha 'dom' ou habilidade real para ser preceptora e, por causa disso, ela não conseguiu moldar o caráter.
Por fim, comento que tal como em vários livros que se propõem a contar uma vida, temos uma breve fala sobre a questão da morte.
Geralmente nos apiedamos dos pobres, pois percebemos como seu extremo labor os priva de tempo extra para expressar seu luto pelos entes que já se foram, pois são obrigados pela necessidade a continuar trabalhando no mais sombrio dos tempos.
Depois vemos ela discorrer sobre a importância do trabalho (como uma 'boa protestante') exatamente para lidar com a situação. Mas a justificativa nasce simplesmente do conformismo religioso de se adequar à situação presente sem reclamar (o que a Agnes tenta constantemente aplicar à sua vida e transmitir aos outros). Prefiro neste caso ficar com o fato apresentado:
É penoso ser atormentado pelas obrigações da vida sem que possamos desfrutar de suas felicidades; ser compelido a batalhar pelo seu sustento quando o coração está por um fio de se despedaçar completamente, quando o desalento da alma nos faz implorar por repouso apenas para chorar em silêncio.
A brilliant Brontë, as always - historically fascinating in terms of examining the role of governesses in the 19th century, and a thoroughly moving love story besides.
Thoughts on rereading - I think I enjoyed this even more. A really interesting, engaging, subtle little story.

what i didn't like: annoying yapping of agnes- sorry but u are not the main character - ohh wait she's actually the main character - but excuse me I don't like the self righteous holier than though judgy main characters especially when they are incompetent at what they are doing - agnes babe u aren't a good governess trust me while i agree that the families were not good but you were also not doing anything except complaining half the time and judging literal children the other half.
and i thought this was supposed to be a romance novel- and u gave us nothing? aah there was so much potential in Mr weston and agnes(i mean they do end up together) but only if she gave extra chapters to their relationship instead of yapping about idk what.
imo this could have been so much better but the plot just fell off and the ending and romance was rushed. but nevertheless an easy read so yeah :)

Kinda boring. An incredible amount of animal abuse for some reason. I suppose Anne included that so Agnes could speak up against it and hence we like her more.
