Das Buch gibt in erster Linie sehr starke Avatar Vibes, weswegen ich es auch gekauft habe. In der Hinsicht hat es mich nicht enttäuscht, dennoch ist mir der Einstieg sehr schwer gefallen. Die Charakter fand ich nicht sehr greifbar, zwar haben beide Hauptcharaktere etwas mystisches an sich. Um die Handlungen zu verstehen und um sich in sie reinführen zu können hat mir irgendwie etwas gefehlt. Hinzukommt, dass ich beim lesen sehr viel überlesen konnte und mir nichts gefällt hat, es mich eher gelangweilt hat wenn ich jedes einzelne Wort gelesen habe. Zum Ende hin ist es, aber deutlich besser geworden, was größtenteils an der Spannung lag. Den nächsten Teil werde ich lesen, da es mich jetzt interessiert wie’s weitergeht. Kein Must Read und ich bin überrascht, dass es im englischen so gehypt wurde.

May 2024 reread:
Bumping this up to 4.25 stars. Maybe it’s because I’m reading through the lense of nostalgia but definitely having an even better time with the series this second time through

I really enjoyed this book, and I’m looking forward to continuing the series! There was some wonderful world building, that for the most part I was able to understand - though I was a little confused by some of the dynamics between normal people and sorcerers. Vhalla was also an interesting character. She surprised me throughout the book with some of her thoughts and choices and I was pleasantly happy to see it! I wish there had been a bit more about her relationship with Prince Aldrik - I felt something missing from their chemistry though it did improve as the book progressed. Some of the pacing was slower but the ending was exciting and interesting. I’m ready to see what will happen next!

There's nothing special or different about this book on magic that makes it different from others. It has the usual girl with super special magic, the dark mysterious hot guy who likes her and is equally if not more powerful, the other random guys in the story who also have the hots for her, etc. It was an enjoyable and predictable read that I was hoping would come out with more. I don't see what makes Vhalla so special

, but everyone wanted a piece of her. It was the classic "I'm not pretty, but I have 3 hot guys after me", which is so overdone and not even believable.

I didn't really understand how we got to the ending. Aldrik carries her injured body to the castle but they take her as prisoner because she tried to kill him?? Why didn't Aldrik just say, "JK, false alarm, I'm in love with her and I'm just concerned for her well-being so I took her home"? It really felt like Kova tried to create this fake drama just to get her to the ending that she wanted, which was for Vhalla to be sent to the war front. It was a sloppy and lazy ending that I didn't care for.

I stand by it being an enjoyable read, but it's nothing eye-opening or something that tries to do something that hasn't been done before.
