Do you know how many forms of "doll with a nut head" I googled before I found the title of this?

I don't know how I got my hands on the book originally, but I loved this as a child. Despite the other reviews below, I was not disturbed by the ending, I thought it was actually quite nice. But I was a morbid child, so that might explain things.

Loved it. Wanted to live in a bird's nest. Wish I still owned it.

A 1940’s newbery award winner. We did this as a read aloud and enjoyed the illustrations ( although the Noah’s arc style Christmas scene with its elephants and lions on their way to the barn was super out of place). Honestly, this book was super strange in general. No real flowing story. Each chapter is about a different animal most of whom are kind of narcissistic or selfish but written very vividly. The whole cock pheasants casting out the hen pheasants for the winter storyline felt its time period and the tale of the fawn whose mother is killed (or was she?) was just sad. I found mrs hickory herself to be borderline unpleasant for most of the book. Her sewing clothes was fun though! It was part whimsy, part nature book. Yet, Somehow against all odds I felt that the last three chapters really brought the whole thing together and it did end up making it feel like a complete story worth your time.

All I have to say… is that a SQUIRREL ate her freaking HEAD. Any way you look at it, there is something wrong with having the main character’s head eaten. I don’t care how hungry the squirrel was or how tasty her hardhead looked. Her head still got eaten. And for some reason there’s some light to the situation? I do NOT understand. Other than that though… it was an enjoyable book. Breezy read, not too difficult. Just not my style. And I still don’t think a squirrel should have eaten her head.

Slightly bizarre animal fantasy about a twig with a hickory nut for a head. Often the chapters did not seem to flow together. Also, it is just a little outlandish at times. It was okay, but not one I would willingly re-read.

A cute cottagecore fantasy except it was written by a crazy person. Miss Hickory is a huge B to all the other woodland creatures and then at the end a squirrel bites her head off and her body gets grafted back onto a tree. HORRIFYING for kids.

This book is really weird. I didn't hate it, and it's certainly less problematic in hindsight than a lot of the Newberry picks, but still, wtf

This is a cute, imaginative book that was obviously written by someone with a fair bit of love for and knowledge of plants and animals.
