After finishing [b:Slave to Sensation|178476|Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1)|Nalini Singh|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1347798536s/178476.jpg|172416], all I wanted to do was go find me my own man-cat who purrs and pounces and stuff. One that plays with little cubs and growls at people. Wait. This is getting weird. But, damn. That panther/leopard guy is hot.

And besides his prowly hotness, I want his freakin' tree house.

Was it just me, or did everyone picture Sascha as that freaky nurse-girl in at the beginning of Star Trek that births Jim Kirk? No? Just me? I could NOT get that image out of my head - it's all the descriptions of the 'big eyes' and starbursts and stuff.

In fact, I thought of Star Trek a lot while I read this book. Mostly because I felt like the Psy was sorta a version of something we've already seen, i.e. Vulcans. Except not. Really, the whole Psy thing baffled me...they don't feel but yet do emotionally respond. The gradient thing confused me. There was always an undercurrent of anger in every Psy we met except Sascha. Don't get me started on how someone who grew up in the 'silence' could recognize or have emotional responses that are typical. I actually found it a bit silly in places.

I understand fantasy-fiction. The author can really do whatever they want. Good fantasy though is grounded in something relatable to the reader OR has sufficient background worked in the story. That was my big problem with this book. It started way out in left field without any satisfying explanation.

But it was hot. Nalini Singh is good at hot I've decided. To wrap it up, I thought [b:Slave to Sensation|178476|Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1)|Nalini Singh|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1347798536s/178476.jpg|172416] was a hot, silly read. Two adjectives I never thought I'd put together. So like, 5 stars for the hotness and 2 stars for world building.

Story: 5/5 ⭐️
Audio: 3/5 ⭐️

As a long time paranormal romance reader, started reading the genre around 14 years ago, Nalini Singh is a freaking master at her craft and I'm both excited to now read her books for the first time and kicking myself for not reading them sooner. This book absolutely encapsulates that classic paranormal romance energy. The possesive and protective male lead yet paired with a fiercely independent and badass woman. Lucas and Sascha were such a great couple. I read this book in a day and I am not typically that girl anymore, adult life and responsibilities are obnoxious, but I said forget it I'm reading this all! The writing and plot just flowed so well and the tension was placed in the right spots and there was conflict without it being eyeroll level miscommunication or something that felt forced. The story felt like the perfect length to both grow attached to the characters and their love story, while also not dragging out parts of the plot unnecessarily. Overall I highly recommend this series for anyone who loves paranormal romance or shifter romance. Also if you read this please read it with the context and understanding that it was published in 2006. I personally listened to the audiobook and can definitely tell the narration style and audio quality are overall lower than what we would expect currently. The narration was okay and allowed me to read via audio which has been my preference lately but it's not something I would seek out as a first time audiobook listener either. Regardless the story itself is amazing and I cannot wait to continue the series!

Wow, am I ever glad that I read this on my Kindle instead of purchasing the hard copy with that AWFUL freaking cover! Holy crap is it over the top BAD. Lol.

That aside, this book really wasn't bad. I liked the sci-fi angle and the smutty bits were pretty fun with the added sci-fi elements involved (I'm a sucker for smutty sci-fi lately, don't know what it is). The dialogue was a bit repetitive at times and it got a little overly mushy for me in the second half (okay, a LOT overly mushy for me in a lot of the second half), but it kept me hooked and I read it in a day.

I'll probably be reading more from this series.

It's one of the books I reread from time to time.
