Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book. This is a 100% honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own. I wish I loved this book, and the premise of a mirror world where the mirror people are actually monsters trying to replace their real counterparts is a great one. However, Ying’s naivety and ability to fall instantly in love with either version of the Prince she is arranged to marry is frustrating. Ying being some kind of prophesied hero is not fleshed out enough. There is also a moment where two of her brothers die, we do not know their names or anything about them, and after their death there are a few moments she talks about it but her focus too quickly moves to wanting to marry the Prince properly and the physical side of their relationship. This leads to you as the reader having no emotional reaction to what should have been a poignant moment.

this is a story with a very interesting concept. it's a world that is very new and exciting, I love how the author made it work with such a unique concept.
I'm not sure how to explain my feelings towards this one. I was never really invested in it but I didn't want to DNF it because I wanted to see how it would end and how the author would turn things around. once again, I think it is a very unique concept and I guess that my expectations were a bit too high and weren't really met, and that's on me.
I had some small issues with the way information was delivered in this one because it felt a little bit too convenient because we wouldn't know about something until it suddenly made sense for that thing to be real…? and sometimes information was a bit inconsistent.
I wasn't the biggest fan of the characters. I actually really enjoyed Zhang, he was a solid character and did what he needed to do. "his" character's plot twist was a bit predictable I called it on page one but it was well done and woven into the story. Ying was a bit stubborn, dumb and judgy. which is okay, people like that exist… I just don't like them and I didn't like Ying. I feel like if she would've just stop for five seconds and really think through things, things would be more beliaveble and enjoyable.
overall I feel like this has a great concept and plot but the execution was not the best. it felt a bit forced, rushed and at the same time dragged out. and there were a lot of sideplots that didn't really make sense and just distracted you from the main plot in a bad way.

Instalove, weird love triangle with two different versions of the same person, but the one who's supposed to be not nice seems to just be a bit gruff that's all, so if they were going for enemies to lovers, it was all resolved pretty fasg.

Writing style wasn't working for me. Plus I thought it was YA but judging by earlier stuff, there's a reason the main character is over 18 and it will just get spicier.

Also the audiobook narrator never turned off the vocal fry and it was grating.

Amazing idea, great concept… just felt like there wasn’t enough planning and thought into the execution.
