Usually I close a Bentley Little thinking the same thought over and over again: "Why did I read this book?" By and large his books swere to the silly, over the top side of horror. There's parts that will make you laugh, and I don't think it's intentional. Still, there's something there that makes me keep giving his stories a shot. Go figure.

In The Association, Barry and Maureen move into a beautiful gated community with the HOA from hell. This book picks up right from the first chapter which is when the first gross thing happens. Like most of Little's books, it's mostly about human depravity with a tad bit of (maybe?) supernatural thrown in. There is blood and gore, but it's not overly descriptive and there's no gratuitous sex in this one. The writing is simple, yet effective. I could feel Barry and Maureen's anger and fear as the situation escalated. Many people say that Little's books follow the same formula, and they do, but it works and I will keep reading his books because I love the over the top campy horror contained in their pages. This is my fourth book by Little and I would say it's my second favorite, right behind The Mailman.

At first I was a little disappointed because I read The Store first and this seemed to have the same premise, and I thought it would be the same story retold in a different setting. However, I really enjoyed this book and would read 20 more like it if I could find anymore. Bentley Little is now one of the authors I can reliably go to for a good casual read.

As someone who used to live in a gated community with an HOA, this is scarily accurate (minus you know the horror, blood and guts

What a GREAT book for those of us suffering under the tyranny of a homeowners association. It also made me feel better about my HOA...after all, at least we are allowed to have pets and eat Chinese here!

A good book, with interesting characters and a creepy all too possible story.

Well I'm done. With about 80% of this novel finished, I just can't stomach it any longer. I've thrown in the towel and I'm putting it away for good. It's that bad.
The premise, from beginning to end, is ridiculous and totally unbelievable. More, the characters are flat, two-dimensional, and void of any redeeming qualities whatsoever. What a dud! The dialogue is also forced, contrived, and overly used as a plot advancement technique. Way too much.
In the end, I'm equally disappointed with myself for sticking with this dud novel so long. I kept wanting it to get better, but it never did. Thankfully I did not spend any hard earned money on this book.
