Surprised at myself for really liking this. I'd only read Rogerson's An Enchantment of Ravens beforehand and absolutely did not like it, so I began this with a mound of salt.
The lack of romance and the drama that usually accompanies it is particularly refreshing, especially since it opens up more opportunities for actual plot to flow, and I'm so intrigued by the world's Hierarchy of Spirits and nature of possession. The developing bond between Artemisia and the revenant is the most important relationship in the book and I'm curious to see how it will further evolve in future installments.

If you're into YA Fantasy I'm BEGGING you to pick up one of Margaret Rogerson's works, because they are bangers. She is in my opinion pretty underrated and I am already looking forward to reading the sequel to this book.
"Vespertine" has all the qualities that I loved in "Sorcery of Thorns" and then more. "Vespertine" has intricate, unique world building with a wide array of fun characters and a quick pace that's not too difficult to follow. Our protagonist, Artemisia, not only has a badass name, but somehow manages to be more prickly than the revenant possessing her, and I feel like we so rarely get characters that have such a well built out explanation for their anti-social tendencies.
I really loved a lot of her personal arcs especially her friendship with Marguerite and her partnership with the revenant. I will also say I am a SUCKER for the "girl who's supposed to save everyone being called a saint and rejecting that term/role" (maybe it's a Leigh Bardugo influence??).
A solid fantasy read all around!
