Fascinating set-up for the world and story, and parts of the subplots are great too.  But the pacing is off, and events that should be a huge deal are largely left behind each time as we move onto the next thing.

I read it as a slice-of-life style ramble, and it worked well enough, but if you like a plot to come together or for there to be more than a glimpse of the Big Picture (politics, culture, society across different races), this isn't a great choice.

overall: really good. my two hesitations are the treatment of Lian's gender (which in some ways I thought was good, but there was the weird implication that agender people are always, or even usually, asexual, which ??? weird.) and, not unrelated to that, the overwhelming heterosexuality (the discussion of Lian's gender/sexuality, for example, being premised on an assumption that gender and sexuality only really exist in heterosexual terms and contexts).

that aside, I'm looking forward to reading The Galaxy Game and hope we will meet a more sexually and gender-wise diverse Cygnus Beta.
