If we’re looking for a good classic children’s book about magic let’s focus on this one, I say. I LOVED the storyline of this, its commentary on pride and destiny and all the classic story beats of fantasy. Ged is a layered character and the world around him is so interesting — it’s also so clear to see the inspiration from Indigenous cultures in the setting and magic system itself, which is so cool especially for something written in the 60s. Half a star knocked off a perfect score only because it is a very male-centric story and the women are very much secondary, even deemed lesser in the story (which I guess is a product of something written in the 60s, even if by a woman).

Ursula K. Le Guin is a phenomenal young adult fantasy author, and A Wizard of Earthsea is a prime example. You've probably read books about old, ancient wizards, now follow a young, sometimes foolish one as he grows into his powers.

Read it many years ago and loved. Not enjoying it now. Too many place names and Ged is petulant
