Forever . . .

Judy Blume

This is one of my favorite books. I read it for the first time when I was in middle school, and I read it in a day. Ever since then I get the urge to reread it about once a year, and each time I do I take a day and read it.

If I'm reading this as an adult, I give this two stars. It's dated, I don't agree with the way some things are portrayed -- in fact some parts made me feel downright icky. I'm really thankful I never found this book as a teenager, because it would have given me a mixed-up bag of ideas. My upbringing was dramatically different from those of the kids depicted in the book, and I wouldn't have known what to do with this knowledge.

But I'm giving the book three stars because, at least for the kid I was, the almost medical level of detail in discussing sex and a gynecologist visit would have been engrossing and interesting -- and something I never got from anyone else, so I would have appreciated that.

Some very bizarre pacing choices were definitely made but I see why this was so revolutionary at the time it was published and how it’s remained relevant.

This is one of the most banned books of all time and certainly Judy Blume's most banned boom. Why? Gasp! She talks about teens having sex. This book is so banned, that despite the fact that it was published in 1975, I didn't really even know it existed until I was well I to adulthood, and I didnt read it until my mod-40s. This was a fun read, but not my favorite Judy Blume novel. Also, despite the fact that this book was kept from me, I read WAY more explocit content in high school. Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins and the spelunking scene comes to mind for example, and THAT book didn't talk about STIs and the importance of preventing teen pregnancy. I would let my teen read this book and then have a great conversation about consent, birth control, waiting vs not waiting, etc.

Wow, this was like passing around porn in seventh grade - so juicy for our relatively tame bunch!

I read this book in honor of Banned Book Week, September 27–October 4, 2008, deciding I should read something off the list that I hadn't. (And for the record I'm NOT recommending it). There are books like Harry Potter and Where's Waldo, so I thought maybe this one was on the list for some silly reason, like some others. Well, it's all about sex, so I guess I see why it's on the list.

A high school girl and her serious boyfriend are just sure they'll be together forever. Originally published in the 1970's I was caught off guard by the open liberated parents, and talk about birth control, along with the pretty graphic sex.
