Fab book- so humble , as someone continuing to 'live with brokenness' , this just spoke volumes to me, and left me so thankful for God's outrageous grace!

Wise. Moving. Heartbreaking. I don't know how else to describe it. So very much worth reading, but grab the kleenex first.

Usually "superstar" Christians (or most Christians?) feel like they have to keep their failings under wraps. This, inevitably, has a tendency to blow up in a spectacular fashion. Not so with Brennan Manning. His failures are uncomfortable, his brokenness and vulnerability an unnerving example. This book and Shrink have got me thinking a lot about the spiritual significance of not having it all together

A lot of stock Manning stuff in here, which is good stuff, but not much new. Several parts just repeated from other books.

“This vulgar grace is indiscriminate compassion. It works without asking anything of us. It's not cheap. It's free, and as such will always be a banana peel for the Orthodox foot and a fairy tale for the grown-up sensibility. Grace is sufficient even though we huff and puff with all our might to try to find something or someone it cannot cover. Grace is enough. He is enough. Jesus is enough.”

I last read books by Manning in 2008. Somewhere along the way, I was able to download this book, his autobiography. I read it last May, but forgot to write down my thoughts.
Manning had a hard life and his recognition of G-d’s grace in his life did not come easily or quickly. Like many of us, he had to learn the lessons of love over and over again.

Although I am not sorry I read this book, I believe that Manning’s book, The Ragamuffin Gospel is far superior. If you haven’t read that one, start there.

As has been said, Brennan Manning's life has some tragic twists. If he could have only allowed the Holy to take the addiction away and allow him to live the Grace he so claimed. Well, written. Insightful and I learned a lot. I'm offended at the review who judges Brennan's character and not the book. His theology might be shaky but God is much more generous and loving than is allowed. Brennan brings this word in a powerful away and clearly changed the folks around him as a result.

Sad for his marriage, his "wet" brain and all that. His was a full life.

I really don’t know where to start as this is a tremendous memoir by an amazing man. I have thoroughly enjoyed this audio and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys memoirs/biographies. As Brennan himself says he is a survivor and is very honest about his life. It is upsetting at times but very inspirational throughout.
I identified with his Irish Catholic roots and the baggage accompanying it, something I haven’t really thought about much before, but which makes a lot of sense.
Maurice England is just perfect as the narrator, and as I don’t know what the author’s voice sounds like, he was Brennan to me, sharing his life and God’s amazing grace.
I feel very privileged to have listened to this wonderful memoir. There is so much in this audio that I think I’ll have to listen more than once to fully appreciate it.
