For Full Review: Polishing Mud Balls

Bram Stoker’s Dracula was not at all what I thought it would be. I thought it would be creepy, and suspenseful for which it was not. I thought it would be about Dracula, and it really wasn’t. Even though it did not meet those expectations, I did like Dracula. I liked it because I see it as the corner stone for all the vampire stories that have come after this book. It is the foundation for the vampire lore. Much of what I think a vampire ought to be came from Stoker’s Dracula. This is classic, and one that ought to be read, especially by those who do like vampire lore.

unfortunately kind of disappointing. live, laugh, love gothic lit, but this did not meet my expectations. i liked it overall. but the prose did not exactly blow me away, half of the male characters are redundant and interchangable, and the notorious (homo-)erotic subtext is barely even there & not interesting enough to warrant its fame. and i haaaaated the slow pacing too like OMG I DONT GIVE A FUVK ABOUT THESE BOXES AND WHO'S SHIPPING THEM WHERE I DON'T FUCKING CAAAREEE

this was my third re-read, and it just didn’t hit as hard this time. i’m a lot more well read than i was with my other times reading it, and while there are some great moments and one-liners in this book, a lot of it is pretty boring. i still love the first 100 or so pages though, very spooky and atmospheric.

I may re-visit this rating… the beginning held such promise but it didn’t help that I read Carmilla at the same time… like Carmilla is THAT GIRL. They pull a “Jaws” where we don’t really see the monster until 75% in, which is fine! But the last 20% was a SLOG, I feel like he could have written the third act more efficiently.

Obviously points for continued pop culture relevance and inspo. Would I recommend??? Maybe physically reading!

Finally, finally, read this! The initial scenes in Transylvania were interesting, but then there were hundreds of pages of slower action. Very, very similar to Frankenstein in style and pacing. Lots of slow letters / journal entries interspersed with action.
