It would've been 5 stars if I hadn't decided to read the second part. That was a mess. And I didn't get it at all. It was a completely different story from the first, where did all the greek mythology come from???? And why??? And apparently Goethe intended it to be very different from the first part and to be ~kinda vague~???? But why????
The first part is excellent though, i love Mephisto, he's a sarcastic, evil piece of shit, just amazing!
The appendix was largely very interesting, though I didn't feel it necessary to read every single page of it.

I love the beginning. The rhymes are reckless. The last part of this book just takes a lot of determination to read. Not because it is emotionally demanding, but because it is so boring.
Okay, I was 19 or 20 when I read it. But I remember my huge delight in the first part. And my impatience for the last part to just be *finished*!
